i used to have 45 guys in stock VII i think, engine room almost filled up with a spare engine crew taking all but 1 of the aft quarters, then 2 spare places for the sound room guys and 4 spare places for the watchcrew so they instantly went to sleep as i submerged.
my system was 1 nco and 3 rating on the watchcrew, the ratings steer the boat when on that watch and the nco mans the radio while the soundroom guys sleep. (soundcrew being 2 radio qualified ncos who dont have a replacement) on cruising duty means they sleep while the spare nco does the radio. worked very well in the stock game, action stations means the watchcrews do the repair and the torpedo guys are all busy, only a spare engine crew sleeping to relieve the ones on duty after an hour of depthcharging.
6 guys in torpedo room with 6 spare asleep. 3 watchcrews to rotate between watch, steering and sleeping. works well as the 3rd watch gets to sleep whenever you submerge

in GWX i am currently having a great deal of difficulty keeping the boat functioning, i may have to sack some of the swabbies. but then, its only my first patrol so they need some experience and qualifications too

Yes there is. Open your Program Files/UbiSoft/Silent Hunter III/Data/Submarine folder. The top file of each folder should say NSS_Uboat7B or the equivalent for each boat. Open that file for each boat, and just a little way down you'll see a section labelled [Properties]. The last line of that section will say "StormConditions=7,0.1;max wind speed [m/s], max rain intensity [0,1]"

That means the max weather you can fire the gun is 7, and the max rain is 0.1. Change them to 11 and 0.4 and you'll be able to fire the gun in those conditions. Change them to 15 and 1 and you'll be able to fire the gun in a hurricane. The downside is that those numbers also control your watch crew's rain gear, so they'll be out in that hurricane in regular shirts.

Me, I use SH3 Commander and set the waves to x2. When it says 7 in my weather report the waves are washing over the deck and I don't want to send my boys to the gun.

And WELCOME ABOARD, both of you!
