*hit, %uck, $amn, #ell!!!!!!
So I am absolutley baffled on one of 688i single missions. I have been trying it for days now using different methods of attack. It is supposed to be the hardest mission in the whole game. I believe it call Against All Odds.
I am using the so called easy methods according to the player's guide. I all I do is head south deep and fast. I then turn west and slow down to see if I can pick up anything. I start to hear faint trace on the sonar and the next thing I know the two akulas are 4 miles from me to the north . I proceed to launch a couple of torpedoes and no matter what I do they never hit. i run them silent till just before impact and nothing. My only take on this is the Akulas are running fast and deep also, or they are just staying below the torpedo depth I have set. I never get the circleing torpedo though so i dont think they are too deep. Anyways any help would be greatly appreciated. |

I would say, run south like you did, and stream your towed array. Try to move on both sides of the layer to remain undetected by the Akulas and let them get to within 8,000 yards. Fire two torpedos at each (one above the layer/one below). As soon as the torpedo's acquire the prey, cut the wires and reload tubes 1-4. At this pojint move below the layer, and move slowly. If your torpedos miss, you don't want the Akulas knowing where you are, and you don;t want those dastardly Heilix's finding you either. If you destroyed the Akulas, proceed west slowly under the layer. These enemy surface ships will continue East towards you. Position for your attack. And you know the rest........ Again, I'd advise caution against the ASW helos. By the way, did I mention the helos can be a real pain in the you know what? You can also carry a bunch of Harpoons and target the enemy surface units from your ESM mast. This requires you of course to remain shallow and slow. You can also use radar if you're real daring, desperate, or short on time. but I usually advise against radar. This last paragraph is just alternatives. I would usually try to detect everything passively and remain undetected for as long as possible. Use passive sensors, the layer, and your weapons range as your advantages. And remember, stealth and remaining undetected by everything in this mission is your greatest advantage. |

I recently worked through the single missions including this one and tried a rather unconventional approach. It worked as I earned all 1000 points and was not fired upon with a torpedo
At the start, I sprinted south for a short while to get farther away from the helos. Using ESM bearings, I then fired 4 harpoons interpersed with 4 tomahawks. I figured 2 or 3 of the harpoons would hit surface ships (SAMs would take out the rest), and maybe cripple the carrier. The tomahawks made good decoys for the SAMs. After the missle fire, I again went deep and sprinted around the backside (western side) of the surface force. Then I took out the remaining surface ships. Finally, I continued east and tracked the Akulas so I could attack them and finish the mission. Probably not a good real life strategy, but it worked in this scenario. |
