Carrier??
Well, here I am diving to avoid planes again on a regular basis. I'm in LZ4187 which sure seems a long way from land. All the planes seem to come from and return to the SSE. There have been 2 torpedo planes, a dive bomber and a pair of fighters. Plotting their flight paths in a straight line does not intercept Australia. Do hints like this mean a carrier in the area? Or is it just a random roll of the dice by the game? There have been no radio reports of a task force about. I suspect it's a waste of time and fuel heading that way, but could there a carrier lurking about?

you are driving a German Uboat in the Indian Ocean? and you are playing the Stock SH4 with Uboat Missions V1.5 with no mods? if the answer is yes to both of those questions, then...yes there are actually three different Allied Carrier Groups patrolling in the general vicinity of LZ4187. two are British and one is American. I cannot give you any additional details because that is CLASSIFIED. I am sure you understand. more than likely, one of two things happened.
once you are sighted you will be overflown until you are not sighted for a considerable length of time. keep at it, Herr Kaleun. You'll get better at it.

You nailed it on my gaming situation. As far as I know I have never been inside the circle (visual?) of the approaching planes while still on the surface. Crash dives hid me as far as I know. My orders do not send me to the sse where the planes seem to come from. I'm off to the sw. I'm curious though, could I actually find a task force if I headed that way or is that not an option for the game? (The Indian Ocean being surprisingly big, I suspect I wouldn't find them, but if I hit the lottery would I find a carrier? Or are the planes just a game annoyance? Can the game factor in independent actions?)

the planes are an annoyance but they have to be based somewhere, eh?

Yes if there's no viable land around for the enemy, you can follow them/plot the location of the carrier to engage.

Well I finally had spare time on a raw cloudy day, so I loaded up a saved game to go off and get a carrier! Plotting the courses of returning fighters I set off into the deep blue. Trying several different high speed courses in the same general direction, I had no luck at all. No help from radar or frequent hops under to check sonar. Planes continued to show up from the same general direction, though the frequency suddenly tapered off to none. After 7 retries of the saved game, I've concluded finding the carrier is like winning a billion in Powerball. Somebody might do it but it won't be me!!
