"Plane" has different meanings, so I suggest that this is not a flying machine at all, but a tool for shaping wood.
They won't fly (unless you throw them), the modern form of a hand plane (the Stanley plane) was invented around that time, it was made mainly of steel and it was invented by an American (his name wasn't Stanley, though). |

Ostfriese gets the prize
It's an Elliot Starke bench plane, the great innovation being the corrugated bottom intended to reduce friction during use. I thought I'd better get this done sooner rather than later so as not to tick people off - but I reckon I could've gone on with this for days
