people see the word destroyer and think of all those ww2 movies with destroyers, the average ww2 destroyer weighed in at about 1500 tonnes, the t45 weighs in at nigh on 8000 full load. but the navy names by role not by any other specification.
if its role is too carry its a carrier if its role is to destroy its a destroyer if its role is too sink then its french....i mean a submarine.

compare the type 45 to a ww2 era vessel it would chur out as probably a light cruiser HMS belfast is a standard cruiser and is 11000 tonnes.

i was wondering just which nation the RN think are going to launch an airborne weapon against a T45?Read Lewis Page's book Lions,Donkeys and Dinosaurs to get an idea that this ship is defending the fleet from a cold war threat-only 16 years late. Most pwo would launch three paams against an inbound missile threat so you only need about a dozen offensive weapons in the air and the ship will soon be out of weapons to fight!perhaps they can use some of the excessive order for typhoons to practice on!!!

you can pick up an exocet cheap $1 million per missile some other russian missiles are less take a scud a guy bought one (now in duxford) for a little over £2000, now some not so well off countrys with a coast could launch many of these out of date or obsolete missiles and its a good job the T45 is around to stop them

Our airforce reminds me of old Soviet doctrine - Don't worry about building the best, but worry about overwhelming them in numbers instead. This is what the US's Airforce follows more closely at this time than at any time in the past. As we know, this does not work well in a time where losses are unaccaptable by our public. Just be gratefull that we haven't had to go up against a country with decent hardware since allthought the US would win, the loss rate would be way unacceptable, even from a warfighters standpoint! -S |

The US Air Force is not pathetic. Take a look at the Global striking abilities inherent in B-2 which gives little to no warning of attack, B-52's and B-1's with their abilities to carry huge amounts of ordnance and long loiter times, F-22, Global Hawk, etc. The latest Block F-16C's are still potent tactical aircraft, as are the F-15C with the latest in AESA radar technology and missiles. A-10's have proven to be invaluable in every action it has seen to date. If I was to list everything the US Air Force has to fight and win war, this paragraph would run on for what seems like forever. I haven't even touched on the full range of Information Warfare and Surveillance programs (Including Space based assets). Information is the key to winning war. And US Air Force's ability to gather data in real-time and deploy adequate force to destroy is unmatched. As of this moment, nobody can challenge the US Air Force for dominance of any battlespace. China with only a handful of Su-30's, Su-27's, and J-8's ain't gonna do the trick. India's Air Force in real world applications could not deploy anywhere and every basing situation they have would be totally vulnerable to attack, especially if based on their home soil. Take heed, your Air Force is much better than what you give it credit. There is no "overwhelming numbers" theories working in any doctrine of the US Air Force. I know, I've been there. It's all about precision strike and utilizing the least amount of hardware to do the most amount of damage. While I think Su-30 is a fine tactical aircraft, I have seen no evidence to show it's of a higher quality than the US's latest block F-16. It looks to be highly maneuverable just like most Sukhoi aircraft seem to be built for. But being ultra-maneuverable ain't going to help you when you have a couple of F-16's being directed into your combat area in a positional advantage via tactical air controllers, and backed up by US Navy jamming aircraft. |
