Yeah, the eye candy is obviously much better. It plays mostly like X-COM. I've wasted may an hour glued to my computer screen whacking mutations and "Greys" (that's their little pet word for aliens).

If you liked X-COM you'll like this. I heard that they might be coming out with a new X-COM. I forgot the company who originally produced it but if you do a search you'll probably find info on it.

Great thread, it's a trip down memory lane. I remember my first (and only other) Sub Sim which was Silent Service and I played it on my Commodore 64!!! Ahhhh, happy days. I remember thinking: "These graphics are amazing!!!"

Can you imagine, 30 years from now, our children will be trying out something like Half-life2, or Doom3 for history class, and would consider the graphics "quaint"?

Von Scheerbach: I've run games with DosBox on XP without any problems, so you should be able too as well. That's what it was made for!

try f.e.a.r. -- the ai in that will literally blow you out of your shoes -- advancing under cover, suppressive fire, moving environment objects to create cover, grenades -- if you're kicking ass, they'll even refuse to engage you.

In no particular order, these sims are what make having computers worthwhile for me. Of course, where applicable, all the best add-ons have been utilised.

FS2004
Silent Hunter III
Orbiter
Sub Command / DW
Operation Flashpoint
Aerowinx 744 Simulator
Pardox Games series (EUII, Hearts of Iron II, Victoria)

For instant, gratuitous feedback, the following I have succumbed to in the past:

C&C Tiberian Sun
Stronghold
Quake II
Close Combat III and IV

and more recently, for just plain fun:
Half-Life 2
