While enroute to the patrol grid BdU assigned me in late 1940, I ran across this taskforce off the northwestern coast of Ireland.
Visibility was quite low with heavy seas. As it was, I had a DD almost dead ahead at 4500 meters that I could just barely make out through the fog. I stayed behind the aforementioned DD but inched my way deeper into the heart of the convoy to see what exactly it was and to my surprise I found this. Repulse class BC. Too far ahead to get off a decent shot, and moving too fast (18 knots) to close with. The best I was managing to pull with the weather was 16 knots at flank speed. (Note - I edited the gamma a bit so it's more visible.) Trailing behind it, was an Illustrious carrier that offered a far better firing solution. Realizing I had to make a prompt choice, I decided to start putting together a course and speed for the convoy. The DD ahead of me was beginning to get harder and harder to see and my course plots revealed what I'd already suspected. The convoy was getting away. Up till now, I'd been mostly relying on magnetic detonators for my torpedos to offset the massive about of duds with impact. This time, I had no choice. With the carrier being almost 6000 meters away, I couldn't risk using magnetic detonators. I plugged in a quick solution and fired a spread of 4 torpedos set at a 1 degree interval. 2 hit, 1 was a dud and the third either missed or went deep. Unfortunately it wasn't enough to stop the convoy, but it did manage to slow the carrier and thus the convoy down to a far more manageable 11 knots. I lost some time after firing by diving to 120 meters and going silent. I had no idea where the DDs would start searching and I didn't want to risk being detected. My caution paid off, though I lost quite a bit of time and had to work to get back up to the convoy and eventually ahead. Moving into a more favorable position to hit the Repulse, I fired another spread of 4 torpedos. All 4 hit, but 2 where duds. She started to slow down and heave to the starboard quite badly, so I backtracked to the carrier and finished her off. At this point I had to go evasive. The 4 DDs escorting them were buzzing around like bees and as yet they still didn't have a fix on my location. I decided to keep it that way. After manuevering around for a bit and losing contact with the Repulse on the hydrophones, I decided to go to periscope depth for a peek. That proved ultimately futile with the sea state so I opted to go decks awash. Now on her port side, I fired off a coup de grace shot to finish her off. Dud. I had to bring my aft tube to bear to fire off two more. One was a dud and the third was the charm. |

Here are some screenshots from TMO 1.9.
Just when I thought Bernard was only found in the ATO, I ran into this about 1500 yards off my starboard side... Apparently he took "Seaplane" a bit too literally... Note the propeller still spinning (TMO 1.9 btw.) First patrol of the USS Seawolf, SS-197 based out of Manilla. Plagued by dreadful weather, visibility was down to approximately 250 yards due to heavy fog. After shadowing this Japanese merchant for almost 2 days in hopes of fairer weather, the Seawolf opts for a surface attack. Disguested with the weather, the USS Seawolf turns southward torwards the northern tip of Luzon. The weather continues to get worse and again the Seawolf is forced to make a surface attack under abyssmal conditions. Later she aborted pursuit of a large Japanese convoy due to the weather, which endured all the way back to port. Mid 1942, the USS Seawolf berthed in Freemantle, Australia. Surfacing at dusk for some fresh air. The Seawolf had been plagued by aircraft while patrolling off the coast of Singapore. Late 1942. The USS Seawolf claims another victim in the Makassar Straight in her preferred hunting ground. |
