You don't need to connect to the server at all, just to play offline. The desktop shortcut points to the "rof_updater", so don't use that one.
Follow this path to launch without connecting...you can even make a desktop shortcut.

Yep, I discovered this only yesterday on the RoF forums. I hadn't realised that the updater could be side-stepped. All is well with the world now
