Default Silent hunter to easy to be realistic

Posted Tue November 01 2005 05:13
I find sh-3 to easy . I play on 75% realism . My career has been virtually without any serous damage up untill the end of 1943. I also played the gibraltar mission . When i was spotted by destroyers i dove to 60 meters . While massive amounts of desroyers came to look for me they did not find me at a depth of 60 meters and silent running . They did not even damage me . I stayed under and surfaced when i passed the staight an reached la spezia . I think the destroyers let go to soon . with 8 + destoyers looking for me they did not even find a hint to find me . I think this is unrealistic . I before sh-III came out i allways dreamed of a situation like in das boot in gibraltar but this never ever happend to me . Not even in a 1939 to end of 1943 career . Whats up with this? I mean what ever happened to the stories of u-boats being depth-charged for + 24 hours and badly damaged?

I personally play in 85% (outside view and WO help still on) I'm heading into 1941 with minimum damage to my U-Boat. I tangled with destroyers twice.

Once in Scapa Flow about six of them where hunting me. I managed to get two (BOTH LUCKY SHOTS one sunk and one heavily damaged). They spent the better part of a day looking for me and managed to shake me up a bit.

Second time was a lone Destoyer in the channel. He did a better job at rattling me but I managed to get away. I had some minor flooding and although I wasn't overly concerned that I was going to sink but both encounters didn't seem easy.

Are you playing the vanilla version of the sim or have you installed some mods? That makes a big difference.

Bump it up to 100% realism then let us know how easy it is. "Too easy to be realistic."

The problem is that Destroyers will only dc you for a certain amount of time before buggering off. In the default game I believe this is set to 15minutes; in RuB (included in IuB) it's 40 minutes.

In real life, this depended on the situation; convoy escorts were content to drive away the sub, but h/k and esort groups were set up specially to destroy subs or forcing them to surface by pursuing them for hours if not days.

I don't believe anyone who says thay they survived 1943 without getting bombed....it's just not possible. What kind of rear-echelon missions are you running?! Transport?

How on earth can you say it's too easy, then in the next sentence say you play at 75% realism?

I play at 85% as well (IuB installed), and have yet to make it past October, 1942 in a campaign.

Crank it up to 100% (or at least 85%) and install RuB or IuB, then get back to us on "too easy"....

I play at 85% realism with IUb. Haven't been able to make it past early 1943.

I have been killed at depth by destroyers. Killed once (and instantly) by the very first DC volley when I dived too late, got down to about 75-85 meters (my last career). But far more often, I get killed by airplanes. Two careers ago, a flying boat dropped a bomb smack on target, just as I was almost below the surface, and that was that.

It is true that you can go pretty much unscathed in the early war. But that's what is supposed to happen in this sim. By the end of the war, it gets extremely hard, and most U-boats (the vast majority, in fact) did not survive.

For me, this is the real challenge – to survive the war. I figure if I can survive it once at 85%, I will then crank it up to 100% realism and see how it goes. (Have to wean myself off that external camera, though.)

Yep. Soon as you take the responsibility for sinking ships upon yourself it gets way harder. It's easy to get target speed, distance and AOB with map updates on. Much harder to make observations in a heavy sea with the scope flying up and down and plotting it yourself on the map. Just came away from an encounter with a TF in the North Sea. Managed to sneak quite close to make speed and heading obsevations thanks to nightfall....but could I ID the buggers....? So some guesswork came into play. Since it was my first TF encounter I didn't anticipate how quickly I'd have to set up the target info and missed them. Then detected!.....and that's where I left off. If I had auto targeting, map updates or WO help I'd never have had to rush things so much and would have probably made a sinking.

Point is when you have to do it all for yourself it becomes much harder. At first I used to play with map updates on, ex cam on and auto targeting. When I felt more confident I turned off auto targeting and used the fast 90 method as described in Wazoo's guide. This got quickly boring, however, since it's easy to get speed and heading with the map updates on. One patrol later I'm at full realism bar the ex cam (which I can never bring myself to do away with for fun's sake rather than for info) because it was too easy with map updates. Now it's bloody hard! If you're finding it too easy, as for any other game: up the difficulty.

75% EQUALS easy!

100% NOT easy.

Up the realism.

I agree 100 percent realism is the way to go with SH3.

Sorry but must disagree, the captain doing everything on the ship is I.M.O.s wrong.
A manager that does not manage is no good.

Of course thats my opinion but everybody should enjoy the sim the way they like.
