Do we have 'voice actors' here?
Just a theoretical question out of curiosity, do we have members here who could and would like to do some voice acting?
The idea came to me while creating my current mission that would benefit a lot from custom voices, since receiving text messages that are actually the crew talking to you (like the XO informing you about something) just don't cut it at all. They are hard to notice and even if you help that by adding a notification-sort of sound, it's just... it doesn't 'work'. Would be nice to know if the few mission builders we have here, would actually have access to that sort of resource! |

This is definitely interesting to me. I have a somewhat decent mic, but no voice acting experience whatsoever haha.

Well I'd say you don't really need any 'experience'. Audio quality is terribly low in the game anyways but custom voice files really pimp up any mission. There are some great examples already, Nichol's RSR campaign for example. Rather bad quality but it just adds so much to this rather...bland game.

I agree. The question is how much becomes too much? I think if done tastefully and carefully, you could really add a lot of plot to a mission.

If you cross them, the XO or rather the navigator of course, informs you by text. That is just...not enough. Just some normal American voice saying "Captain, we're in 'whatever' waters!" is enough. Basic stuff! |

Ah, ok. I understand. I got all excited haha. Yes, stuff like that would be good. I guess in today's vernacular, you could call them "smart" call-outs.

I'm not too fond of custom sound files in missions. The volume doesn't follow the sound volume settings in the game. The first time I played one, I had headphones on, and all of a sudden I hear this klaxon screaming into my ears. Felt like someone stabbed me with a knife!
No, use text messages instead, please! |

Normalization can be done to the sound file that will be used in game to keep the volume down. A mission creator must be responsible!

For example, using the software "Foobar", it has a feature that normalize the sound volume of a collection of audio files! ;-)

Every basic sound editing tool has normalization options.
I worked with GoldWave mostly and sometimes Audacity, years ago with Acoustica. Normalization is... normal. |

I'd be willing to take a stab at some voice acting. Never done it before, but I've got a fairly decent mic. I DO make music (just usually don't use vocals) so I know how to use my audio software.
Matching the volumes to the already in-game sounds wouldn't be hard. I've just been taking a look at them, trying to figure out why I'm getting irritating popping sounds, and I see that most of them are actually quite quiet.
