To make a long story short, the memorial is in the way of retail and housing development...so it has to go. Never mind that a bunch of WWII vets in their 90's have given heart and soul to this project - in honor of all the lost WWII submariners. As if that's not enough, one source says that people are already starting to steal parts off the submarine, as souvenirs. Classy. QUOTE: "Borg is planning a redevelopment project with mixed housing and retail, leaving the veterans and the artifacts with nowhere to go." Couldn't find this new posted elsewhere; mods feel free to delete if need be. |

Wow, that's sad. This almost happened to the Cavalla in Galveston, hopefully the community and vets will find a solution.
![]() This was the fundraiser I started, we raised over $229,000 and got a lot accomplished.

Now this is really messed up, it's like the attitude "Oh who cares about some war that happened a long time ago... That's not important but making money is." I really hope that they find some solution soon or else it's another part of history down the drain.

I suspect this won't be the end of this story. The site pays tribute to the 53 Subs and 3,500 men lost on those submarines. There are other stories I know of with regards to WW2 submarines being left to languish and then being " rescued " and given new life and a home somewhere else. I'm sure stories like this will continue to be written and raise awareness of these sites plight. Hopefully, others who feel the same as you including veterans will step in and find a solution and or a new home for these national treasures. These vessels and the men who served aboard them are veterans of the highest caliber and deserve to be honored, remembered and maintained.
Those who forget history and it's lessons are doomed to repeat it. That happened to a friend of mine in grade school. He forgot history and had to repeat it a few times. ![]() Thanks iambecomelife for helping to raise awareness of the Ling. ![]() Last edited by Commander Wallace; 06-26-16 at 06:51 AM. |
