Default Lifesaver duty

Is this right? I can't catch up to these bad boys. Even at 20 knots those smoke monsters are leaving me in the dust.

Seriously, I am having to go for miles, ten to fifteen, and even then I can't catch up to some.

I'm running the stock game, no mods.

Is there a right way to close in on these guys. I've rescued a couple but gee whiz, it's more work than torpedoing a ship.

I don't think so. I was able to complete the pickups by staying away from using time compression to accelerate movement to the survivor. Didn't want to jinx my success by trying to use time compression again so can't say for sure. The thing I noted was in any explanation of lifeguard duty none of the reviewers spoke of the anomaly I was having either. So I figured it had to be something I was doing.
