Connecting to internet - problems!!
I have been trying for a few weeks to get my wife's computer connected to the net with no success!!
![]() I have a 3G21WB router/modem, it has a wifi connection to BigPond ISP, not that that really matters, this router also has 4 LAN sockets one of which goes to my computer (LAN 1), this was the initial setup connection to the internet and worked well. ![]() I have since connected my wife's computer via LAN (LAN 2), run "Network Setup Wizard" to connect via "This computer connects to the internet on my network through a residential gateway or through another computer", at the conclusion of this both computers connect OK, can transfer files, share printer etc but it will not connect to the internet. ![]() Now if I run "Network Setup Wizard" and connect "This computer connects directly to the internet. The other computers connect to the internet through this computer", at the conclusion I just get an error message! ![]() Funny thing is my computer is connected via "This computer connects to the internet on my network through a residential gateway or through another computer". ![]() I'm starting to think that the Internet connection has nothing to do with LAN connections! Most frustration since others (on another forum) have had no problems doing this but none can/will offer any help! ![]() I don't see any point in running the BigPond setup disk since it is already connected to the internet, this would sets up accounts etc! ![]() Any Help appreciated! ![]()

Are you using Windows 7 or XP, shouldn't really matter as both will setup automatically but with Windows 7 there is an option Home or Public when you first setup your network/internet and choose the right one for you which would most likely be home.
My network is setup - network hub pc connected to lan1 and 2nd pc connected to lan2 both share files and can access the internet. Last resort you could try some app like ZoneAlarm or any firewall protection app, install and let it setup your network & internet sometimes this method solves internet access. Sounds like windows is blocking the 2nd pc from the internet only allowing network access. |

Both machines have XP, I don't use windows firewall, I have COMODO, I did try the wife's PC without a firewall even but no go! Back at my old residence I used to have an ADSL modem to the main PC then LAN cable to Ethernet HUB and wife's PC to the HUB, worked a treat! Unfortunately only wireless out here in the bush!

Zone alarm only lets you use one computer as a 'gateway to the internet' to allow another pc to connect to the net if you are using zone alarm pro.
messing about with 'pc gateways' and the like is a pain in the backside - either you get file transfer between pc's and no internet, or you get internet and no file transfer - that's my experience anyway. Connecting via an ethernet hub/router is more or less 'plug & play'. Have you manually assigned ip and dhcp addresses for these computers? I know my router default IP was interfering with my pc's default ip - so I had to change one, and set an IP range on the router so if any other computers were connected to the network they would not have problems. Most of the time you can set it to automatically assign from a range of IP/dhcp or whatever and it just gets on with it. http://portforward.com/default.htm handy site for this stuff. If I were you I'd start from scratch with your connection install. ![]()

I have tried with manual TCP/IP and auto, either way the LAN works but not the internet, I have uninstalled the Marvell network, rebooted and it auto reconnects to the LAN again, I do wonder if I should try running the Bigpond setup on this computer as well as mine!

That shouldn't matter.
Did you try a different port on the router (though it is probably not a bad port)? It may also be a configuration issue with the router itself (like for example, things are going out successfully, but being routed back to the first computer not the second). Also are you using a DMZ? I would also try putting the second computer in LAN 1 to see if it works that way. That will help you figure out where the problem is. You also may want to try doing a hardware reset on the router, this sometimes fixes issues like that (but it will put the router back to the factory settings). The usual procedure is to hold down the reset button (usually recessed in the back of the router) for 30 seconds, unplug the router while still holding down the button, count another 30, release and plug back in. |

Open command prompt (Start>Run>(type) cmd (press Enter)) and then type "ipconfig /all" without the quotes. Do it on both and paste the results here. Got to be something simple!
