Default Asthmatic engines

I'm playing GWX3 with SH3 Cdr and just changed to a VIIC. For some reason the boat just isn't getting up to any decent speed. Ahead flank on a perfectly calm and flat sea gives just 13-14 knots, and in heavy sea she struggles to even make double figures. Weirdly, at the first three engine settings (everything up to Ahead Standard) the boat happily keeps to her usual/expected speeds.

What gives? I've had the same problem in previous patrols in the same career, but that was with my faithful old VIIB ... I do have Sabotage/Malfunctions ticked in SH3 Cdr, is it related to that?

You say you're using SH3C. Do you have Malfunctions and/or Sabotage enabled? That will make things go haywire, one of them being loss of top speed.

I am indeed and I do have malfunctions enabled, so I guess it's that.

Thinking about it, it's a very realistic failure: loss of a turbo on a diesel has exactly the same effect ingame as it does in real life. Now, if only your LI could tell you that he's found something amiss with the motors!

Also they can't be repaired. But...if you save and reload the game they will be.

I wish you hadn't told me that, I've just abandoned my patrol and set course for Bergen 'for repairs'!

Of course, I suppose RL U-boat machinists could repair a failed supercharger at sea...

Yes they could. SH2, which was pretty awful in some areas, was actually better in things like that. You could get an engine breakdown and have to travel at slow speed for several hours while repairs were made. SH3 doesn't allow for anything like that.
