Permission to come aboard?

Hello to all.
I'm signing on for the first time and as green as a stalk of broccoli! I'm hoping you guys can help me get my fix. First a little about me.
I have had the chance to visit several WWII subs, U-505 in Chicago and U-1 at the Deutches Museum in Munich, Germany. I am planning on visiting the USS Ling in Hackensack next week when the museum opens back up. I have been aboard two active subs while in active duty. One U.S. Nuke Los Angeles Class and one British diesel-electric which has since been transferred to the Canadians. I never got the chance to go to sea on one and being too tall for U.S.Navy regulations I wasn't allowed to even apply. I guess thats why I've grown such a fascination for sub life.
There's something about the life on board a war ship at sea that gets into the blood. It's indescribable. I've always said the most comfortable bed I ever had was in-between the fins on a guided missile while playing in Nato war games during some heavy seas. The rolling and pitching of the boat, the hull cutting through the water like a dull knife. The sonars rhythmic electronic tones. The solid grain propellant filled missile under my back, yellow band high explosives at the front just waiting for the chance to be freed on our enemies. It's hard to imagine unless you've been here but for me the memories are so vivid, so compelling.
I'm looking forward to getting my first subsim computer game and have some questions.I run a Mac system. Are there any games which use this or will I have to run a bootcamp on my system?

The only game I have is silent hunter for the Ipad. It's okay I guess. I'd like to get a bit deeper though. I am an avid reader of all the regular books on sub warfare. And I've worn out my copies of The Hunt for Red October and Das Boot.

Welcome aboard, Knownman! Don't worry, we won't hold your Mac ownership against you.

As far as I know you'll have to use a bootcamp. Most of these games are for the niche market, so you won't see a lot of direct compatibility installs for Macintosh. However, I know for a fact that some of our guys run these games on Mac, so your best bet would be to go up to the forum of the game(s) you want to play and ask there.

Silent Hunter is a classic. The Devs spent each build since then trying to recapture what made that game so great. Some games were more successful in that regard than others. If you want to continue to play as the USN in the Pacific, check out SHIV. I would suggest Ducimus' Trigger Maru mod as a great was to deepen the immersion. If you want to try the Atlantic, SH5 is the newest game in the series with some great mods. However, due to the fact that the game is newer and has had a bumpier road, so to speak, I would add that SHIII is the more complete game. I would also recommend the Grey Wolves mod series to add immersion in that game. If you are interested in modern nuke boats, Dangerous Waters is as good as it gets. The graphics are dated, but you don't play that sort of sim for the graphics. LWAMI is generally regarded as the must-have mod for that game.

If you want to find books that can be tough. Many of the best books are out of print and can cost several hundred dollars a piece. Unfortunately I've never seen any of these in any type of digital format. As Kriegsmarine items are the most sought after items by us collectors they are also much more rare. For example, a excellent condition KM Honor Roll will run around $2000, a Luftwaffe one would be $800 or so in the same condition. Problem you have is two groups of people after the same books for 2 different reasons which drives the prices up (on the rare books).

Depending on where you live, if there's a naval base you could be in luck. While at the library and doing searches some of the rare books may show up but are located on the base somewhere. It takes a little time, but you can request to have the book sent to your local library for a small fee (was like $5 as I recall).
