Where's your favourite hunting grounds?
For me, it has to be BF17 and the surrounding squares. I've never failed to find a fat juicy target whenever I go there! |

Lately, I have had good luck with BE31-39. Filled with convoys during early war. I also find a lot of single merchants just north of Scapa Flow.

So far in this career I've had the best luck in BF16, when patrolling around Great Britain, and in DH71/72 when I got sent further south. The former is smack in the Western Approaches to southern England and the latter area is right on the Freetown convoy routes. I racked up major tonnage down there, mostly from a couple convoys that had almost no protection. One destroyer, or an armed trawler or merchant, was about it for each one. And those convoys seemed to be packed full or ore carriers, tankers, large merchants and cargo vessels - plenty of big fish to choose from.

Early war: AM53 (Approaches to The North Channel), followed by BF13-15 junction (Approaches to Saint George's Channel).
Middle war onward: BC43 (East of Canada), and AM19 (Rockall Bank). |

I love AM65/62 (adjacent to each other, 62 on top) as you can literally sit there and merchants keep coming to you steadily. Several task forces start in that area which is always a bonus, and the Hood is sometimes parked in AM62 until the task force starts.
Personal fav is CG96, Gibraltor is always full of good merchant ships and warships are always parked there and just increase as time goes along. CJ87 becomes my next poaching spot once I transfer to La Spezia, can sometims catch entire convoys coming through. |

Besides many of those lovely locations already listed, I've been patrolling the waters SW of Iceland as of late. AD59 tends to have regular convoys with numerous easy to sink tankers, whale factory ships, etc... That and there's lots of deep water available.

The north and south approaches AM and BF are usually the most profitable.

This thread inspired me to take my SH3 Commander patrol reports and put them in Excel. What a revelation!
1) My tally (53 ships, and only this career) bears out the advice so far in this thread: the AM51-AM53, BE38-BE39, and CG94-CG96 corridors are very rich. 2) I hadn't realized just HOW rich the CG94-CG96 area was, though. But looking back, I can see I've sunk 10 there, including Hood and four Large Merchants, between Sept '39 and June '40. But I do need to get out more. I appreciate the Freetown and Iceland tips... I see too few tankers and whaling ships.

You could check out the webbie in my signature to see where other players found enemy shipment.

Around BF17 is usually a good spot, though in this patrol I've spotted a grand total of 1 ship in the whole of BF16-19.

Home port looks pretty good, I haven't even got out of the harbor today,
One boat went backwards when I set it to ahead flank and another CTD the moment I started her up and the last one went into the belly of an axis destroyer. Anyway, Check out the space NE of Northern Ireland where scotland and N.I. are nearly touching just wait there and merchant after merchant will come, but watch out later in the war the RAF will nail you if you stay surfaced too long. |

My favorite place to hunt convoys is the square formed by CG86/89/96/98. You can catch them going in and out of the strait of Gibraltar in nice, deep water.
