I could be wrong, but I believe that Arclight's BRF mod fixes that weird behavior. Have you tried it? If that does not do it, TDW has said that he is messing around with ship buoyancy/sinking characteristics.

Darn, even after splitting the zones down the middle like you had proposed to do?

didn't need to. They were already split. But I just figured out some major pieces of the puzzle in the zones.cfg file. Now I know how to do what I'm trying to do More importantly I undestand why

Good to hear Yeah, I should have known that they were already split, otherwise there would have been no listing in stock.

I just started messing with the ship's damage model so no it doesn't. I hope to have a completely revamped AI damage model done here soon though One main goal of it: ship's being able to capsize Not to mention flooding causing damage and sinking of the ship over an extended period of time. I finally figured out a major road block last night and I got some info from the devs recently

Awesome! Got to love those periodic nuggets of knowledge from the devs

Not all ships can capsize. They'd need to be either of big L/W ratio or very top heavy to do so. This usually means big Warships. You might even say that a flooded lower compartment can stabilize a ship. Capsizing should however be prevalent in rough seas with a compartment partly flooded (and empty of cargo).

Edit: However: a bank angle of more than 30-35 degrees usually means that a capsize (>90 degrees) is about to happen. This might not sink the ship immediately, it can take up to hours for an overturned ship to sink. I've seen many ships in SH that go beyond that angle without rolling over, which is completely unrealistic. In my opinion, ships should only bank if they have longitudinally divided cargo holds. Otherwise, the water would fill the compartment evenly. And, as stated before, a partly flooded comparment (any compartment that has air space above the waterline) should be very sensitive to banks, including the ones from a simple turn.

To give a good example, consider the Titanic. It had a massive rupture in the starboard side, which flooded many compartments. The ship didn't bank at all, it just sank bow first, in calm waters and stopped engines.

sounds great

for me i'd be most happy if they no longer stand on end out of the water

the trouble i see with capsizing is not getting credit since it doesnt (or is likely not to) sink

You'd add an extra zone or 2 that, once the ship flips, start flooding.
They'd pull the Ship down if the Game needs the help.
There should be enuff zones that flood as they are.

Tried using zones like that, but they tend to pull the ship on it's side. To really have it fully roll over is tricky, and imho really only should happen to the big warships with large superstructures.
