Default Died last night.

I think it was late 1940.

Hit a convoy just southwest of England. Perfect setup, but I got detected by the port-side Black Swan. I engaged her with the deck gun at about 4500 yards. They never hit me, but I hit her at least 2 times. She turned and fled, burning wildly, while another Black Swan came down from the front of the convoy. I took that one out with a magnetic torpedo right down her throat.

I pressed on to attack the convoy, and am certain I sunk at least 2 Empire freighters, but missed a magnetic shot on a third Black Swan and they nailed us good. I had a full-green damage control department and put them to work fixing the two flooding compartments, and dove, since both periscopes were out.

I should not have dove. The DC team never got ahead of the flooding, and we sank.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your boat. But why on earth would you attack an escorted convoy surfaced??

One has to assume it was night, and Maillemaker was trying to slip in between the escorts.

At least, I hope it was night!

It was standard practice.

Sea must have been smooth as glass to hit a Black Swan at 4500m. Glad you have better luck with magnetics than I do.
Nothing like the thrill of a new crew and boat.

Yup, since 1939.

I didn't. I was doing an end-around them, skirting the port side of the convoy to get in front of them, cruising WSW. I got all the way in front of them, and cut back 90 to hit the convoy track, but I cut back too soon, and the port-side escort spotted me and opened fire at about 5000km. So I headed pointed my ass nearly straight at him, with just enough angle for the bow deck gun to open up on the escort, and I nailed her at least twice at about 4200m. She exploded and began to burn brilliantly and, interestingly, stopped the pursuit and turned right, breaking off and heading back to the convoy. I've never seen an escort give up like that in-game, it was thrilling to think we "bloodied her nose and took the fight out of her!"

Then the convoy lead escort came into view, and I dove and pointed my ass at HER, and nailed her with a magnetic right under her chin (100% realism, too).

With no one else visible, I proceeded, submerged, to intercept the convoy, and was just about to make my assault when I saw the escorts moving in. They must have seen my periscope. I continued the attack and sank one empire freighter and probably hit a tanker, and then turned towards the nearest Black Swan and went full reverse. As she charged in, I fired another magnetic - went right under her but did not go off. Tried going flank to turn away but she went right over the top of us and bombed us good.

Interesting choices you made... It would seem you pushed your luck a tad too far.

With a destroyer 5km away there is plenty of time to go deep and lose the sucker. If then you are too far out of position to re-engage the convoy then break off run a parallel course at top speed and reacquire a few hours later starting fresh. I hate shooting at zigzagging targets throws my firing solution out the window and I get no better then a 50% hit ratio...

I try to always engage the enemy under my terms and for me its all about the stealth. We drive a sub not a BB we have no room for error...

Yup. It was late at night and nearing bed time, and I was pissed that I was discovered.

Should have run and re-intercepted, but I was a cowboy.

The problem with having a pair of big brass ones is that they break your foot when someone lops them off.
