Default Should I buy SH5 or stick with SH4 for now?

I am having fun learning SH4 and have not got too far into it yet. I have been reading alot of negative comments about SH5. My main concern is will my computer handle it? I read the system requirements for SH5 and mine should handle it. Here is some basic info on my machine. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Pentium 4 @3.6ghz
2 gigs of ram - (will be upgrading to 4 gigs soon)
Nvidia 9800 gt with 512 ram
Windows XP

SH4 runs great on my machine. Thanks!

Is your processor dual core? You will need a dual core processor to run Silent Hunter 5.

My answer would be to give Silent Hunter 5 at least 6 months to settle down before you purchase it.

Your single-core CPU might be a problem with SH5, memory and gfx card are OK. As a rule of thumb I'd say if you can run SH4 maxed out with good FPS then SH5 will most probably be playable on your system, too.

SH5 has two main problems right now:

1.) the online DRM system that has in the past couple of days repeatedly made it impossible for customers to actually play the game because the UBI servers encountered technical problems and you have to be connected to those servers all the time, even for singleplayer mode.

2.) the unfinished state of SH5 that involves a rather large number of minor and major bugs and missing/unfinished features.

On the plus side: with the help of a fast-growing number of mods already released SH5 can actually be quite a lot of fun.

It basically depends on how much you're interested in the atlantic theater and how willing you are to put up with the DRM and SH5's state.

The longer I play SH5, the more things I find that are broken. Some of them are minor, some are real show stoppers (at this moment I cannot progress my campaign because there are no missions to select). Now I am hopeful that many of these issues can be resolved by modding (personally, I am not counting on a comprehensive official patch)... but that will take a while.

So I'd say: save yourself the frustration and stick to SH4 for now. Get the U-boat addon if you haven't already, and maybe some of the great mods. And start saving for a pc upgrade. In a few months SH5 will hopefully be restored to a better state, then you can think of it again

If you really want to try SH5, buy it. Take a look and shelve sh5 for a while if you bored of bugs or drm. After some months you can play it again when bugs will be fixed. Or dont buy it and wait for reducing prices of game. After some months you can buy the game with more low prices than this i think so, and reduced bugs of course. Up to you!

I have only played sh3 + gwx + mods. I didn`t like shiv.

Shv has a better atmosphere than shiv.

I think that shv will be the ultimate uboat simulator when
the game will be fully patched and modded.

If you spend money for SH5 you are telling Ubi:

Go ahead and deny members of the military the ability to play your game, which you falsely claim honors those who served. They on their ships, in their tents with their laptops can't play SH5. Let them play Pong. They deserve no better.

Go ahead and require all the owners of laptops with metered Internet connections that they must unnecessarily pay additional charges to play Silent Hunter 5. They need to just get over it and work a second job. Either that or play Dig Dug. They deserve no better.

Go ahead and take away others' fair use rights for copyrighted material. With any other similar property, books, recorded music, video, you have the right to resell, lend, give away your copy when you are done with it. But you're never going to want to do that so screw them! They aren't important anyway. Let them play checkers if they can't afford a real game.

Can a game be so "cool" that it doesn't matter if you actually pay money to be battered about the head with a spiked 2x4? Or would you actually pay money so your friends would be bashed with the thing?

I'm afraid this interesting little social experiment shows that people have no regard whatever to the societal damage they cause by making irresponsible and reprehensible economic decisions. I'm afraid the results show that Ubi is right. We are quite willing to pay to be abused. At least we are willing to subsidize the cost of abusing our friends and family. What a sad state of affairs.

The fact is that when you buy SH5 you are paying to promote the destruction of my rights. As such you become just as slimy as Ubi. I, for one, refuse to pay to destroy your rights. Silent Hunter 5 will see my computer only after it is thoroughly defanged. I urge everyone to refuse to buy this trojan horse. You should also refuse to steal and play it.

Sometimes a company is so evil it deserves to die. Ubi qualifies.

SH4 Gold is in the closeout bin and works.

SH5 has toxic DRM, is full of bugs, incomplete and at full price.

Seems like an easy choice to me.

I'm running it on an Athlon XP 3200+, 2gb of RAM, ATi 3850 512 mb, WinXP and it runs very nice with everything on in a 1280 resolution.

I think it will work very nice on your PC if you don't use a bigger resolution or Antialiasing.

From what I've seen of SHV it's a typical Ubisoft simulation. Get some cheaply paid Eastern European programmers to put it together, make a lot of promises, some pretty screen shots, but don't give the developers enough time to properly bug test it/get everything finished.

It gets released and it's full of bugs, so they say a patch is coming. Then another patch comes along that fixes a little bit more. Then about 12 months down the line everything goes quiet and all you hear is he developers saying "well the PC that can play it properly hasn't been created yet" (which translates as "The publisher wanted it out on the shelves making money)

On top of that you've got the DRM.

Oh for the days of Microprose!

I'm definately waiting 8 months before I even look at the case let alone buy the game

Wait, what? Missions? I thought the game was a dynamic campaign like SH3/SH4. How much replay will there be if there are scripted missions?

Don't panic, it is a dynamic campaign. But it is divided into phases, and in each phase there are a number of "macro missions", for example: "Destroy British coastal shipping". The actual patrol areas that are assigned to you depend on the "macro mission" that you choose.

Your specs are sufficent, it'll probably run somewhat less impressive than SH4.
Anything else depends on your preferences, i.e. Simulation- or action gamer. Mind you, i´m not judging SH5 for what it could be ⇒ after some extraordinary effort by the Developers and remaining modders, but what it is.
Ask yourself if you're willing to participate in a betatest for a small fee of 50$, support destruction of 2nd hand markets, and give up some of your privacy to a trustworthy company - for a greater goal of giving the industry more negotiation power over you and me.
