Looks like there is more to this than first meets the eye.

Wait was it a hack job or phishing scheme?
If it was a hack job then anyone could have had their password stolen, otherwise its only those who don't know how to spot phishing attempts (its very easy to spot 99.9% of them). I hate when they get the two mixed up and call phishers hackers (generally totally different things). |

It appears to be a phishing scam.
I agree about the distinction however there are enough un aware or downright ignorant people out there that fall prey to these things.

Yep, that's why you can still con people as well. The thing is though is it takes about 15 minutes to teach someone how to spot phishing/virus/malware attempts, even my mother who hates computers and technology learned how with out any major effort on her part.

I would estimate that nearly 80% of emails I recieve both at home and at work get deleted un-opened. Usually the title or author is a dead give away.
Every once in a while I will get a "dident you get my email"? To which I reply.. did you put a subject in the header? "Free Laptop" ![]()

Thanks to my ISP's policy of using my email address in the web address for my personal web space, I average about 130 emails a day, maybe 1-4 of which are not spam. Lately I've been getting a lot of spam in Cyrillic, which I find weird as being that its a Canadian isp odds are damn high i wont understand a word of Cyrillic.
I actually now prefer using my hotmail address for emailing as I get almost no spam on it. |

LOL once upon a time I created an email account Eatmyspam@somethig or other .com
The account stood for almost 6 months till the ISP told me it had to be shut down due to "extordinary activity". ![]()

Well hacking is in many ways more serious as you are vulnerable no matter what Phishers generally won't get you unless you are foolish, or naive. Also hacking usually takes at least some skill where as phishing doesn't need a whole lot. This is why phishing is the more popular form of criminal activity as it is not very hard to do.
Also phishing is almost always motivated by criminal intent for for financial gain, where as hacking half the time is motivated by other reasons such as politics or ethical concerns (not that that excuses it). |
