Default jeezum!

I admit I never played instant mission. I am (was) a campaign snob.

Last night, not having played awhile because of RL work, I tried out a new instant mission just to keep skills honed. So I selected a mission off Sicily.

Ok. I hit a few tankers. Big deal. Then the destroyers pick up on me and I head full steam at periscope depth to get into the convoy. The destroyers catch up and I drop to 200M and put the boat onto a 12 degree slow turn to starboard ( they cannot get me and I conserve batteries ).

Then I decide to watch the show on OMG view.

HOLY SCHMOKES! The raging scene on top blows my socks off with the Luftwaffe on task, the air peppered with tracers from the gunners!!

I watch AMAZED!! The sky goes quiet and the destroyers (6-7) are depth charging, then comes some RAF bombers to depth charge me too!!

Holy Schmokes!!

Then after a bit more time a second wave of Luftwaffe fighters show up and hit several tankers!

What a show!! I was totally amused and delighted for 2hrs. Hats off to this mission designer. And the ship and aircraft modders too! Outstanding graphics. Outstanding audio.

Yeah, I always tell myself external views are unrealistic, but I always seem to find myself watching the escorts tag-team me, or the survivors paddling along in their rafts. There are some interesting things happening up there where you can't see them from your boat.

I agree.
But, unrealistic or not it seems such a pity to miss out on so much of what has been built into this game / experience

Exactly my take on it, too. Best to leave it enabled in case something really neat happens, so you can watch and snapshot it. Normally I stay on in-ship views, but, as was the case when I tried saving the Bismarck, (I'm sure plenty of you have taken part in this, too) some events are just too cool and rare to miss. If someone bothered to take the time to design and code something, it's good to take the time to appreciate it, right?

Normally, though...external cam stays unused.

By the way, did you happen to take any screenshots of the cool battle you just saw?

Unfortunately I did not take any photos BUT I will do the mission again. Probably the coolest thing I saw as I tabbed to different ships to watch was when I landed on a tanker - I noticed a gunner hammering at the sky so I zoomed in. This guy was bending back to point up and following the BF 109. I watched from his POV and the sky was filled with tracers. I felt I was watching a movie.

I used to design air combat missions for a WW2 sim and did maybe 100 over 4-5 years. I need to see what it will take to design a SH3 mission if one can. (Contact me anyone who knows) What is very neat about designing a good mission is timing - the AI then does it's own thing and always dynamic or different, no matter how you play the sim, events determine what the dynamic AI does and that is fun!

I will have a lot of fun doing all SH3 instant missions now - first time in combat mode undersea and 2nd time watching the events from OMG mode!!
