Default [info] RL time of dive on a Balao

looking for other stuff - japanese - I found this :

http://www.leisuregalleries.com/seahorse.html

Obviously the fast dive takes 50 seconds ! now go and check the stock's time...

torpedoes : 2 duds out of 4

then the depth charge attack : only 13 !

I wonder if the crew also ran to the bow of the vessel to increase the angle of descent

Cool find! Fifty seconds sounds about right for what I've heard about the big fleet boats.

That sounds right to me, (after all I was not there to say one way or the other) But from what i have read and heard thats pretty close to real life. Remember some boats came in at less time and some at more, Just depends on what was going on at the time and training that they had, and so on ect. ect. Fact is noone can say for sure.

20 Oct, 1943
After a refit USS Seahorse (Lt.Cdr. S.D. Cutter) left base for her 2nd war patrol. She was to patrol off Honshu in Japanese home waters.

2 Nov, 1943
While operating south of Honshu USS Seahorse (Lt.Cdr. S.D. Cutter) had a very succesful day. She torpedoed and sank the Japanese troop transport Chihaya Maru (7089 BRT) in position 29.31N, 134.50E, the transport ship Yawata Maru (1852 BRT) in position 28.30N, 135.35E and finally the transport ship Ume Maru (5859 BRT) in position 28.40N, 135.35E.

22 Nov, 1943
USS Seahorse (Lt.Cdr. S.D. Cutter) torpedoed and sank the Japanese transport ship Daishu Maru (3322 BRT) in the East China Sea in position 33.41N, 128.35E.

27 Nov, 1943
USS Seahorse (Lt.Cdr. S.D. Cutter) torpedoed and sinks the Japanese tanker San Ramon Maru (7309 BRT) in the East China Sea in position 33.36N, 128.57E.

dive time : 46''

this logsheet pretty much says it all for the USS Seahorse. But they didn't always monitor how long it took them to dive (see here above)

Dive 261 shows 46 seconds.

Dive 255 50 seconds.

Is that right? Or am I missing an image?

I believe in order for a boat to be commisioned it had to dive in 60 seconds.

The Pampainito web site stated the Balao class sub Pampanito could go to 65 feet in 35 seconds.

Fluckey in Thunder Below states he could level off at Periscope depth in 45 seconds in a Gato class.

Yeah, I don't see 1'11" anyplace. Also, the forms have a lot of variability in how they are entered so I agree that it was 46". Note the min and max speeds reversed, for example. Or "Quick Dives: this dive: 0, 1, yes.

Probably confusion due to not yet recovering from a lack of O2. Down for over twelve hours. I suspect it took longer than 46 seconds to get to 420 feet. But I bet they were in a hurry to get as deep as possible. No mention of the number of depth charges ... I wouldn't be surprised if (during that twelve hours) they lost count.

And trim was made after the dive. "Other remarks: good" ... doesn't tell you much. But it surely hints at a lot.

The average dive time for fleet boats in 1942 was 50 seconds; in 1945 it was 40 seconds.

Source: U.S. Submarines Through 1945

S boats were far worse, with average dive times of about 75 seconds. The V boats averaged about 120 seconds.

So if it took the Narwhal on average 2 minutes to dive, How long would it take the I 400 to dive? 5 minutes?!

that's why they had a snorkel, so as not to surface too often
