Got my first VCR tape of it in the late 1980s. Last track of number of times viewed sometime in the 1990s.

I usually throw it on while I'm playing. It's nice to have it in the background while I'm surface cruising out into the open waters.

I've seen it quite a few times but I'd say I've sat down and properly engaged with it about twice, so that's what I picked.

Not to bait or anything but I don't think it's some kind of tour-de-force mindblow to make the sub community weep. I think it's a great film, and definitely my favourite naval film for its authenticity, but I find it hard to believe a hardcore sub geek wouldn't find tons of inaccuracies in it. To the uninitiated it's as authentic as it gets, but it does have some glaring moments that make little sense. Giant cast iron flanges being repaired in 3 seconds flat, destroyers magically teleporting around the horizon (apparently), and I dislike the way the boat judders left and right violently as if (duh) it was rigged up to a structure that made it do just that. It would just go down as a slightly ropey special effect if it wasn't for the fact that Peterssen spent a lot of money on that rig in an attempt to make it look "as real as possible". I find it hard to believe a boat submerged in millions of tons of saline water would vibrate horizontally whenever under any shock. That is of course assuming she wouldn't have sunk somewhere within the first 40 minutes of the film in the first place.

It's great though. I'd love to get hold of the series version.

You're right, of course. The scale of the wake makes it obvious its a model, and to get the explosions into the camera's field-of-view every single depth charge is so close that any single one would have cracked the hull and sunk the boat. Personally I would have preferred no underwater shots at all, but someone recently pointed out to me that anyone not familiar with the subject would have no idea what was going on. That's probably true for the rest of our complaints.

On the other hand, though, just having the full-scale interior defining the closeness of the situation...

It's not perfect, but it's close, and to date no-one has made anything better.

Where is the "50+ times" option in this poll? :hmm:

This great movie is way too short, even the TV mini series.

I want more, I want more...

Just watched again today. Got the DVD uncut version. German with english subtitles can't stand the dubbed version.
