Default Does anyone think this will catch on?

In a nutshell: Radiohead is about to release their next album. With no record company backing them. And there is no real price tag, you pay what you feel it is worth to you.

Stephen King tried the same thing, and it was a complete failure.

Interesting, I did not know that. You'd have to think that 90% of people are just going to put 0 down as their cost.

Why not? Most people download music these days, why pay for it if the artist says "pay what you want"? My guess is this band thinks if they go with the "honor system", people will be impressed and react favorably. May work... for the first few bands who try this trick... but in the end, I don't think they are going to making as much money. Live shows and t-shirts are the only revenue stream left for musicians. The music is just the wrapper.

Actually Live shows should be the the main revenue stream for musicians.
And we've come full circle.
Music as a product is specific to the 20th century, and it doesn't necessarily have to be this way.
The day the RIAA and its worldwide equivalents go extinct can't come soon enough.

Many shareware tools and "free" softrware is out there, asking you to pay if you think it is of value to you, or to update to the professional version with a price tag.

How many do? Go figure.

Gimme back the time of cassette recorders and magneto tapes, skip all what came after the CD at the latest when digital music in form of downloadable files became fashionable, I knew that the music sale business is as good as dead.
