Default I'm New To This Game And I Could Use Some Help

Hi Guys,

As it says, I am new to this game or this type of game.

I bought and installed it yesterday (including all 3 patches), and I was of course hoiping to get stuck in with the tutorial.

I am rather disappointed with the tutorial.

There is no explanation of what is going on or what to do as you would find with most games out there.

Some help would be appreciated as to what I need to do.

I eventually got to the first point during the first tuutorial, but I wouldn't know how I did it.

Please help!

Thank you.

Hey Arnold and welcome to the forums.

First I'm sorry to hear of your problems. I too never had any previous experience with this type of simulator and had problems with the tutorials. I did some extensive reading here at these forums also for starters and asked some really basic questions.

Ultimately, what I ended up doing was just going ahead and creating a career and learned as I went. Sure I've had to restart several careers, but they kept getting better and better as I continued to learn the quirks of this sim. I started playing my first career with 85 percent realism and manual targetting. I still like external views cuz I like to watch as the enemy takes a dive after I hit em.

Hang in there and give everything a try.

The current manual makes many assumptions, like you've been buying these games from the very first one, (which had a great tutorial I understand) so you'll have to do some digging and research on forums like this one to fill in the blanks.

The main thing is not to get discouraged too fast because you think you're not learning anything. The more you play the more you learn.

Hi Snuffy,

Thanks for the encouragement. I'll definitely stick with the game as it looks awesome.

Not only that, but it is nice to try something different to what I usually go for, such as FPS. Football manager and RTS games.

It can be a very trial and error thing. My advice would be to load up some of the scenarios and just dive right in and start playing. That way if you get sunk, you can go back and correct your mistakes without losing a whole career or anything. A little practice and you'll be stickin' it to the Japs in no time, sailor!

Yup the 'tutorial' and manual leave something to be desired.

Fortunatly for you you have found the best resource available, this forum

The "jump right in" advice is good. Try with the low difficulty settings and work your way up.

Just remember to save early and save often.

Welcome Aboard ArnoldVDH.

I found this forum back in SH2. I didn't join it then I just read alot of the threads and they helped.

Most important, enjoy the game. Work your way up get a feel for what your boats can and can not do. Ask for help if you need it and don't get discouraged if someone acts like you're nuts in their reply. There are some really great people here that can and will help you. I echo what has already been stated. Start with something other than career until you find out what every button does. The manual was not much help to anybody, but if I can learn. I assure you that you can too. Fair winds, smooth sailing and remember to duck. Welcome again.

The latest patch 1.3 includes 1.1 and 1.2 patches . Only install patch 1.3 over a fresh install of SH4 .

Welcome aboard! Also, welcome to on the job training. The sub school is basic at best. The manual is a good coaster for your drink while you play. Other than that, you will learn most from this site and playing the game.

Welcome Arnold

As per all the other advice above you'll find all you need in these forums. Just for me to add that 95% of what works for SH3 works for SH4 so I'd advise you check the SH3 community manual http://www.mysh3.info/shiii/index.php?title=Main_Page

Good luck and good hunting.

Default WernerSobe to the rescue!

You might still want to be on auto targeting while you familiarize yourself with how to pilot that boat of yours. But eventually you'll want to do some manual targeting too! Even if you don't the strategy in these videos will supercharge your game. Check out this thread: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=118923.

Werner has three videos in there that are priceless. Even if you can't make any sense at all from them (a doubtful proposition at best) when you see what you can do in this game you WILL be highly motivated. You'll feel at a dog in a cage looking at a nice juicy steak just out of reach. Like Chevy Chase catching a glance at Christy Brinkley. Like 5 minutes before time to go home from a hard day at work. Like....ok, enough of that.

We are your training manual. With Subsim you're going to be great.

Welcome aboard my friend. You have made a very good decision by coming to the BB for help. You will find that this is a very friendly, helpful group of people.Yes the manual is sadly lacking, but it won't take you anytime at all,and you'll be an old hand. With the latest patch and all the mods that are available,IMHO this is the best sim I've had the pleasure to play.Add all the helpful skippers, and it just doesn't get any better.Have fun!
