Default Removing Deck Gun via SH3C

If I use SH3C to remove the deck gun do I receive any performance gain? eg. increased submerged speed.

Thank you,

M

No. But for no other reason than no-one could confirm with reliable information what the performance enhancement, if any, would actually be.

Hi mate,

May be a stupid question from me but why remove the deck gun?

80% of my kills are with the deck gun.

Because it was done so in reality, due to the ever increasing presence of escorts and aircraft?

If 80% of your kills are with the deck gun, you're probably using the default values, which are WAY overpowerd in comparison to reality.

Are yes stock SH3 I must admit I had a field day with the deck gun.

But not anymore in GWX.

And in reality deck guns were phased out by 1943.

Phhht, I never remove it but i may as well. i rarely get a chance to use the blood thing. I can go 120+ days at sea, and not get to use it once.

After 1940-41 it's really difficult to use it. Most of the merchants have guns so picking a gun fight with them is not really an option. I usually use it against small targets like fishing and sailing boats.

It was nice at the beginning of the war but now that I'm in 1942 in GWX I find that I rarely ever get a chance to use it anymore. 99% of merchants are in well protected convoys and are usually armed themselves.

To me an extra knot of submerged speed or perhaps one second off my dive time would be of greater value than a chunk of steel that serves no purpose bolted to my deck.

Even without this benefit (which I now know I don't receive) I might remove it just to keep up with historical accuracy.

You can, but you have to be careful about it. If the merchant has a gun on one end of his deck you attack him on the other end so he can't swing his gun around. The blind spot is rather narrow. Get no closer then 2,000 - 3,000 meters, and keep your bow pointed at him. If he starts to get you bracketed, put your engines in reverse, back out, and break contact.

If its a liberty or victory ship.. forget about it, use a torpedo.

It's late '43 in my campaign and I sometimes run into T3's in the BE 6x area and I have had to finish them with the deck gun on average of 4 times out of 5. Usually a torp under the stack will blow off both screws and cripple the thing but it won't sink. I've never seen a T3 with a gun on the bow so I manuever around to the front and get nose to nose, slowly backing away as it's own momentum continues to drive it forward for a long time. Blow ballast and blast the thing at about 300 meters. When I hear the telltale earth shattering blast as the boiler goes I go back emergency and normal dive, just to be sure I don't get hit by flying debris or something.

I have never has the VIIC type 4 tower, which removes the deck gun for the larger tower with 3 heavy flak. I am going to keep my boat until the VIIC/42 is available and that will be the boat I finish the war with. I am thinking about getting the type 4 tower at that time.

As for performance concerns, if removing the deck gun would make my boat lighter and accelerate/crash dive faster I would gladly trade it in just to get down a little sooner when the bombers show up.

- Never mind that last part, I am forgetting about displacement.

Precisely

Sometimes I get to wondering if Libertys are more effective than Flowers in a surface engagement :hmm:

I had a really bad experience off the coast of West Africa when I picked a gun fight with a Liberty Cargo. I've learn the hard way to use torpedoes only in these cases. Ocasionally I have attacked armed ships, but usually they're smaller ones with a single gun turret.
