Okay, I'm not usually one to sing something's praises till the cows come home, but I can proudly say that GWX has made me genuinely scared on Silent Hunter 3 for the first time.
Here's the story: Grid BF12, departing from Wilhelmshaven (we've all been there, right?). So I think "Hmm, I'll try the Straights of Dover to get there quick, see if I can intercept the task force heading down from Scotland." Big mistake. I was cruising quite happily at standard speed, cutting through the waves and dancing to some classic tunes from the 30's. Then, the lights change to white and I decide to dive to save me from any hassle with aircraft or surface ships. Good job I did - as soon as the bow sank below the waves, I got about 4 different warship contacts. "Crap" thought I, as I slowed the engines and dove to 25 meters. About twenty minutes later, ping. "Sh*te". Ping. Silent Running. Ping. Change course. Ping. "Wasserbomb!" Chaos. Flooding in three compartments. "Assemble the damage control team! Secure from Silent Running!" I yelled at the screen, and the flooding was stopped, but not before the boat was bottomed. More chaos, all four bow torpedo tubes destroyed, as well as the hydrophone recievers. There I was, at the bottom of the English channel, deaf as a post, unarmed and cacking myself. They never let up. Pattern after pattern found their mark but U-35 held together. Just. The engines were stopped, I was sitting on the bottom, waiting for doomsday. But nothing. The pinging stopped, so I tried to ease U-35 off the bottom and take a look with the scope. They were moving away, probably dancing with joy at their 'victory'. Nope. Not a chance. I blew the ballast, cranked the engines into flank and ploughed away as fast as I could, the boat barely able to stay above the waves, a narrow escape. I love GWX, I love all who were responsible for it, and I love all of you guys. ![]()
