GWX Damage Models :(

Is it just me , or does it take more than one torpedo to sink a SMALL TANKER.... on one occasion the annoying little creature took two torpedoes and still managed to stay afloat , and didn't even flood, both were direct hits towards the engine room.

The damage model doesn't seem to be much different from GW except for those secondary explosions , I have yet to see a single ship explode into pieces.

Keep sinking other ships and you will
Whats to say the tanker wasnt carrying a non inflamable liquid ?

Besides not every ship ever torpedoed blew to pieces

Keep playing the game and you will see how great the Damage Model is. Also with respect to tankers don't forget that they were designed to carry liquids, so sinking them by flooding is more difficult than other ships. In any case the model in GWX is brilliant and if you stick around and give it a chance you will be rewarded

In real life a few ships carried nothing but empty barrels or those with timber - no matter how many torpedoes were fired at the ship it still floated!

I think the damage model is great - it's not an arcade game now like it was with stock SH3

IRL one ship was only sunk after 7 torpedoes.
Wish I could remember the name of the ship or the u-boat.
Apparently the ship was full of empty air-tight containers.

In RL a tanker on her way to malta, got torpedo'd and hit several times, got bombed and hit a few more times, and even a JU 87 crashed into it...and it still made it to malta.

The Ohio was the Tankers name. She was part of the Pedistal Convoy to Malta. That ship's story is incredible. Torpedoed, bombed, aircraft crashes into her, on fire, and she still reaches malta! This single ship kept the island going till it could be restocked again (oil wise that is!).

The damage model is dead on. Now, if there was ever a ship that had solid bulkheads and compartmentalized it would have to be the tanker. I would suspect it to be hard to sink.

Anyway, find a pyro ammo ship BIG BANG after 10 cannon rounds The fireworks were just awesome. Sorry no pic as I was doing this at the time

Update

Just finished a patrol, I raided Dunkirk and Torpedoed a medium tanker (2 torps) and a Passenger Liner (3 Torps), 2 Admiral V&Ws. 2 Armed trawlers eliminated en route to Patrol Grid. Are passenger liners capable of taking so much punishment??

P.S : It was pretty cool to see those searchlights focussing on the sinking V&W , its a long way Tiperaary! Ok, not so long...shallow depth :P

I cruised into scapa flow after downloading GWX. I was playing at the beginning of the war I believe it was September 9th or somewhere around there. I had a field day, except for one small tanker! But that's ok it was my last torp that I decided to use on it, and when she didn't go down I gave it up to bad luck. I had enough good luck utterly ruining the rest of that naval base's anchored fleet of ships. I ended up destroying 4 or 5 destroyers, one troop transport, a couple of small merchants I believe, and something else but it escapes me at the moment.

And on ships exploding into pieces. While I was in scapa I destroyed 4 or 5 destroyers all with one shot each. They were only destroyers but it was impressive never the less to see the fireworks. Wish I would have taken some screenies. Only screeny I got of that patrol was when I first set sail, leaving the harbor. An appropriate mood it set for the greatest war in known history.

Pic of the SS Ohio after the damage and in port..

http://content.answers.com/main/cont...5/The_ohio.jpg

During the convoy's journey she was torpedoed and hit several times by bombs, and by a Junker JU-87 dive-bomber which crashed onto her deck. With a wrecked engine room and nearly broken in half, she was abandoned and reboarded twice but was eventually towed into Grand Harbour whilst sandwiched between two destroyers (HMS Penn and Ledbury) to deliver most of her original cargo of 12,000 tons of diesel and kerosene to the beleaguered island. Her captain was subsequently awarded the George Cross.

The big thing here is people have to drop the Hollywood mindset of 1 torpedo and the ship blows to splinters. It simply does not work that way.

Well depends on the ship of course. A single torp can do a lot of damage. This example picture is modern day but it's a single torp (Mark 48). Tankers of course would be hardier than this ship depicted, so it's just a frame of reference. Can you say owww?

But still
"After Ohio reached Malta, the ship broke in two from the damage it had sustained."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Ohio

I have sunk HMS Hood with 2 torpedoes, hit in rear between turret and propellers which took around 10 minutes to sink. I guess it varieties, but I do criticize about some ships that took several torpedoes hits and still running that the game doesn't credited me for the damages I have caused by giving me some extra renown points. There are listings of both sunk and damaged ships caused by German U-boats in their reports that we can look under U-boat site. If we have a last torpedo left and used it on a ship, it still doesn't sink, then we should get some renown credit for it. Damaging the ships does help a lot in war, because they took a lot of time to repair, which slowing down their operations and strategies. Like Tirpitz, Prince of Wales, etc, they had been put out of action for several months or longer due to repairing the damages; otherwise they would have caused some more havoc. British needed to keep oil and supplies flowing, but the more damaged merchant ships that need to be repaired were also slowing down their flowing and increasing the cost spent for repairing or replacing. Those who caused damages to SS Ohio should be credited for, since it cannot be used to haul oil anymore. Every torpedo’s impacts should be commendable in game whether the ships have sunken or not.

Regarding ships that whithstanded more than 3-4 torpedos, these were the exceptions that made it to the newpapers during the war; very helpful for the morale.

Most Uboat Kaleuns fired salvos, to cover for a miss or a dud. The truth is that that most of the WWII merchants were either rust buckets, or built in haste (Liberty ships) and had structural problems. Didn´t need more than 1-2 torpedos to sink.

In GWX, every ship, has it´s own individual damage model. And it´s behavior when taking damage depends a lot on it´s cargo. An empty small tanker might be a bit difficult to sink with one torpedo...but not impossible (if the odds for the randomised torpedo explosion strength are on your side and not Murphy´s). But on the other hand, loaded tankers are easier to sink...

Well, coming back to one of my earlier questions, how much punishment can Passenger Liners take? I put three eels into it, one hit the middle, one blew the propellor off, and the last one hit the rear. It sank due to flooding after around 6 minutes.

Did I put too many torpedoes that it amounted to overkill and subsequent wastage of ammunition?
