I remember seeing this question here before. Someone had the answer. As much as I remember, it is just a nickname given to the moron of the boat. I don't know where the actual name "Bernard" came from, probably just started with someone named Bernard, and carried on from there.

As Danlisa said, I am the mother & father of Bernard (cant really say that I´m proud of him) . It was just a random name I used in the first picture in the 'Humorous SHIII picture thread'.

I think bernard is an escapee from a mental hospital who was sentanced to death but managed to escape and managed to convince the navy to allow him on submarines.

This reminds me of a certain goat that made the rounds of the 6th Fotilla. I think the goat was a bit more intelligent than Bernard.
