Just dug this up from the sub sim archives
Quote:
I have a special interest in WWII subs, as my father (a merchant sailor) was torpedoed twice by Japanese submarines during the war. Both times the submarine surfaced after the attack and gave the crew food, medicine and warm clothes while they were in the lifeboats. Honorable people, the Japanese. Had they not done that I would probably not have been here today...

Just goes to show the Japanese understood we are all humans, and all deserve the humane treatment.

great, i dont have a computer to run the game on (long story involving a hurricane) so i really dont know what you will find out about it. back when i still had my computer working, i tried it only once in a single mission and it did not show up on the sub as standard equipt, but it may be that it only works if added as an upgrade item i just dont know. so i have no basis to give you any background on it or what to expect.

my intention for it was to have the 50cal as the standard equipt on s-boats not as an upgrade item so thats what i was hoping to get out of it.

i dont know if im wrong about that being the standard equipt for s-boats in reality but i am just assuming thats what they should have?

nope, been busy with the snorkel, then the Ko-Hyoteki etc.. I will sometimes though, but I'm working on my IJN stuff for now.

We'll need two machine guns for the Sen Taka (I-200) eventually and someone to animate them when diving by lowering them in the hull as in RL !

That was absolutely atypical if it was indeed true. Merchant ship sinkings were not at all common with IJN subs, and two during the war seems, well, highly unlikely. Also, the poster (based on his name) might have had a dad from a country other than a combatant with Japan. There were 19 merchant ships sunk off the coast of Africa, and a couple dozen attacked off Australia as well over the course of the war.

There are in fact stories of subs ramming lifeboats, shooting them, etc., from the Indian Ocean.

The Pacific War was no picnic.

Ok for your deck sweeping enjoyment comes the Browning .50 (12.7mm?) Machine Gun
This appears to have been disabled by the dev's and was left in the game.
I re-enabled it for use but it has some limitations, 1)It will not elevate high
enough to engage aircraft flying high overhead, 2)It has no target reticle so
you must lead your target with the tracers.
This should "not" be considered as a replacement for your AA guns, if you don't
normally engage aircraft then it makes a cool weapon to sink small craft, with
that in mind I included lots of ammo, it uses a 100 rd box type magazine and I
saw no reason why a skipper couldn’t have 40 or so of these stacked in the boat
somewhere.
The weapon is available for all boats but does "NOT" work well on any sub with
a "bathtub type" AA deck (it sits very low) Works nicely on the S boats.
I really think this weapon is unfinished and hopefully the Dev's will include
a proper working version in a later patch.
I've also included my S-18 Conning Tower Mod (cheat) so you can mount this for
early war patrols.
(This mod works with version 1.1 of SH4)
(This is Compatible with The Increased & Improved ammo mods)

Cheers

Changelog v1.1a April-10-2007
-----------------------------------

Browning .50 MG v1.1a

\DATA\UPCDATA\UPCUNITSDATA\UpgradePacks.upc < this is the file to change (upc files are text files and will open by using notepad)

-------------------------------------------
- [UpgradePack 7]
UpgradePackSlotType=USMGAA <changed to USLightAA <this is the line inside the file that you need to change and what you need to change it to

\DATA\LIBRARY\USSUBPARTS\Deck_Gun_12mm_Browning.si m < this is anothor file you need to change, open it with silent 3ditor and reset to the numbers below
-----------------------------------------------------
- Increased ammo storage to 4000 rds < simple enough
- Decreased reload time from 10 to 2 < simple enough
- Tried to optimize the elevation settings? < it doesnt sound like he did much to it so i would try it the way its already setup then you can decide if you want to move it. if you want to play with it its found under "wpn_Cannon" and open "Elevation"

S18 Early AA Conning Tower Mod v1.1a

\DATA\SUBMARINE\NSS_S18\NSS_S18.upc
-----------------------------------
- IDLinkUnitPartIntervalDefault1= NULL, 1942-09-15, SClassConning2 <changed from 1 < this line is located under "Crew Evolutions" at the very top of the page

(this makes the upgraded conning tower avail from the start so early S-18 patrols
can mount an aa gun)
this was an old mod for the v1.1 and v1.2 of the game so the mod was probably not updated to work with the newer version game but as i demonstrated, with just a little effort you can take any old outdated or non-working mod or just the mod idea and remake it yourself. not all are explained as well as this one but with some trial and error most are fairly easy to figure out.

just follow the simple steps i just laid out for you and "remake" the mod, its good to learn this stuff if you want to make mods.

you can also download the one i did for you here: http://files.filefront.com/Browning+.../fileinfo.html

when i went to try the mod out i found it wasnt working for me with v1.5, not sure why but i will look into it. maybe thats why the mod was never updated.
Excuse me,capitan. I got a stupid question.
Would you mind telling me how can i download the ".sim" editor for edit SH3/4 file?

If that story is true it is indeed an anamoly. the Japanese were infamous for their barbaric and inhumane treatment of POW's. They're still quite known for xenophobia as well.
