A witness has spoken of “terror and fear” in the heart of Gaza's southern city Khan Younis, amid constant shelling and fierce battles.

Israel has ordered residents to leave the city centre; an official said he didn't want civilians caught up in the "difficult fighting" there.

The Israeli military chief earlier told his soldiers to "press harder" in their fight against Hamas, saying there were signs Israel's enemy was disintegrating.

Footage has appeared to show people surrendering to Israeli soldiers in northern Gaza - but two versions of the same scene have raised questions over its authenticity.

Hamas attacked Israel nine weeks ago - killing 1,200 people and taking 240 hostages, some of whom were released during a short-lived truce.

Hamas officials in Gaza say Israel has killed more than 17,700 people in its retaliatory campaign, including more than 7,000 children.

The UN boss and Qatar - which has been acting as a mediator - have today vowed to keep up efforts to pressurise both sides into a lasting ceasefire.

But Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says dozens of Hamas militants have surrendered and he described the situation as “the beginning of the end” for the group.

Israel has continued its bombardment of Gaza, with the main focus on Khan Younis in the south. There's also been fighting in Rafah near the Egyptian border.

The US is "pressing" the Israeli government to "[put] a premium on civilian life", a state department spokesman says.

Nathaniel Tek says clearer instructions are needed to allow people to move away from the conflict - though he says Hamas too has a responsibility to protect civilians.

In Jenin in the occupied West Bank, at least four people have been killed - witnesses say they were hit by a drone strike.

Meanwhile, Iran-backed Houthis have claimed responsibility for an attack on a Norwegian tanker off the coast of Yemen.

An overnight storm has worsened the conditions for hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who have fled their homes.

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden has issued his sharpest criticism yet of Israel, saying the country is starting to lose global support over its "indiscriminate bombing" of Gaza.
