... and while we're on the subject of Easter. Why is it on a different date every year? Why can't they decide once and for all?

Yes, that is a commonly used argument. I'll leave it to Geroge Orwell, a far greater exponent of the English language than I can ever expect to be, to reply (I changed some font to bold type for emphasis):

A man may take to drink because he feels himself to be a failure, and then fail all the more completely because he drinks. It is rather the same thing that is happening to the English language. It becomes ugly and inaccurate because our thoughts are foolish, but the slovenliness of our language makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts. The point is that the process is reversible. Modern English, especially written English, is full of bad habits which spread by imitation and which can be avoided if one is willing to take the necessary trouble. If one gets rid of these habits one can think more clearly.....: so that the fight against bad English is not frivolous and is not the exclusive concern of professional writers.

.......

The writer either has a meaning and cannot express it, or he inadvertently says something else, or he is almost indifferent as to whether his words mean anything or not. This mixture of vagueness and sheer incompetence is the most marked characteristic of modern English prose

George Orwell, 'Politics and the English Language', 1946

There you go....

Cheers

I hoped my post was suitably jarring to make the point that it did matter. I had trouble reading it back when I 'proof read' it.

Sometimes I wonder if by boss really did want me to 'insure' that something happened, rather than ensuring it happened, as I assumed he meant.

I know what you mean.....

I received a 'report' from a large law firm today.....it's circulated to subscribers......it pointed out words to the effect that xyz committee had made a bunch of recommendations. Apparently the government adopted some but disguarded others.

Disguarded. I kid you not. From a large commercial law firm in a publication circulated throughout business communities.

I nearly called them. I might on Monday.

Sheesh

You'll find this everywhere. Sometimes I burst out laughing at work because of some of the things people have written where they clearly have no idea that what they really wrote is completely different from what they think they wrote. Journalists do it, too.

So for everyone who says it doesn't matter, I send them those bits of Orwell's essay. I have it saved at work for exactly that reason.

OK, I'm a fanatic, I confess!

I realize that language does change over time, and the purpose of the dictionary is to record the current usage, not enforce it. That said, the losing battle I still fight is against the use of the word "impact" as a verb. Hearing that something "impacted" the economy will always make me wince, even though I realize the change has already taken place. This also makes me wonder which words I commonly use as verbs that made my parents' generation grind their teeth. Should I research it? Of course google is an instant classic.

In the wake of the last big San Francisco earthquake (1992?) I was watching a newscaster describe the scene. I'll assume that she was rattled, but I still laughed when she said "We are efforting to make contact with the rescue teams."

Anyway, here is a 1789 letter from Benjamin Franklin to Noah Webster, asking him to use is new dictionary to stop the insidious creeping usage of advocate as a verb.
http://founders-blog.blogspot.com/20...ebster-jr.html

Speaking of apostrophes, I notice that in Franklin's day it was common to use one in the possesive "your's". Either that, or Franklin wasn't as good a writer as he thought he was. But then the dictionary was a brand new thing as well.

what I hate are people who use overly complicated language to make themselves sound more serious and important, when simple and straightforward language is always the best strategy.

for example a politician who announces that:

"My office will interface with our constituants to determine their primary requirements."

instead of:

"I will meet my voters to find out what they want".
