You're right about that. I have not been there.

I am not sure you should defer. It is a sim with the goal of entertainment (as opposed to training or other goal that demands accuracy). Perception is reality and since I suspect for a lot if not most of the players the perception is formed by movie and TV. So if darker provides more "reality" for the majority go with that. I have been aboard, albeit in 1971 on a Guppy II conversion. For me lighter recreates what I recall but that doesn't mean that is the way it was during the war. On the Guppy there was a great deal of flouresent lighting that I am not sure was original. Likewise I am sure the tour boats have been relit for safety.Nuc

All lighting in WW2 was incandescant. The guppy served into the era where flourescent lighting came into use. The lighting it has now may have been part of a retrofit, or may have been added for touring safety- you'd have to ask the owning organization.

I was thinking about that ( "refit for safety" reasons nowadays - for the boat tours) however I don't believe they had the darker - equivalent of three 15 watt bulbs - interior during the War either. Also, it may be difficult to read the new gauges he has worked so hard on. lol

Fun thread.

I'll ask a few of our resident vets at the USS Batfish the next time that I see them. One of them was assigned to the USS Marlin and then to the Loggerhead.

:hmm: Everything I've read points to a well-lit interior during daylight hours (less so when rigged for red). Consequently, I do think the (slightly) brighter light bulbs are more realistic.

I voted stock because the boats were very bright inside when operating, this can be seen in your thread "Intro to the Pacific submarine War" thread it is a picture of the Wahoo's control room when being depth charged.

Stock for me. If for nothing else IRL your vision would adapt to whatever the ambient lighting level is.

The dark is cooler, but as for realism, I think that the bright is 'more realistic.'

RE the photos. Were they using a flash? Was the lighting adjusted to accommodate the photo op? Is the photo we're looking at over (or under) exposed?

No way to tell. I don't think there an absolute right or wrong, that anyone who was not there at that time and place, can come up with.

So we're left with whatever feels right, and whatever sets off to best effect all the enhancement work the modders have done to the interiors.

1 and 5, at least, were taken in combat situations.

I can't see Mush Morton allowing camera flashes if the room was so dark as to kill somebody's eyesight.

Having said that, I remember reading some book, a autobiography by some guy, or a ship history maybe, (Batfish?) that had a skipper who always operated under redlight conditions, or something else strange. This same skipper would sleep in the conn all the time too.

I seem to remember (was this one of O'Kane's books?) that the writer made it clear that light and sleeping conditions were up to the Captain, and the Captain could and would do whatever the hell he wanted to.

So, I guess it's up to each captain.

Light or Dark.

How's that for an answer?
