Well most of us will eventually have Vista. It's just a matter of when. And we'll all find out soon enough how good or bad it is once it's released to the public.

I'm not going to be "upgrading" to Vista. I am planning on buying a Wii and continue gaming as a consoler. I've already disconnected all my Windows computers from the internet, and I haven't managed to get UT2004 working with Suse, so I'm out of multiplayer games, too.

As more and more Digital Rights Management components fall into the market, I'm planning on just getting out of gaming. I've stopped watching Hollywood movies for several years, and the only music I listen to is classical or soundtracks, so I'm basically out of "music" as well.

All in all, I am walking on that path, too. I could imagine that my next system is a simple laptop for internet exclusively, and Words, Chess, some very old hex-strategy (if my interest survives that long), some minor digital picture processing.

Since years I am told by computer-prophets and Linux-lovers that the gaming scene is short of a major brakethrough with regard to linux releases. and since as long I answer that is wishful thinking. Like the superior Video 2000 stood no chnace versus VHS, Linux as a platform for major companies doing game releases for it on a standard basis is fighting a lost battle. Microsoft is too far ahead in market shares, it has become THE standard. Only a major catastrophe with Microsoft, a total security desaster, a brakedown of computer nets around the globe, some very serious events that leaves MS seriously hurt, could change the situation substantially.

In this sense, let's hope for the worst.

it isnt about one point and you can get any game for linux too. its about that there are several games coming and taking some time, more and more are out. as the game engines are platform independent, its easy possible to bring out games on different platforms, like pc (win, mac, lin) and consoles (xbox, playstation). for example from
http://www.unrealtechnology.com

windows isnt the only big player in game market, there is also the playstation.
i hope the simulation fraction is also going to switch to platform independent. wait the usa is on that way too.

Forget about Vista,
Download the Lite version of Vista - created by WindowsX. Its just an interface redone.
Changes are:
Boot up screen - to say Windows Vista instead of WindowsXP
Login screen - to how Vista will be
Aero style Glass display
Menu and Windows
Folders & Icons
Taskbar
Windows Media Vista Skins
A few sounds.
Latest pack is Vista Transformation pk 5.5 (Free)

http://www.windowsxlive.net/?p=137

Or try StyleXP: http://www.tgtsoft.com/prod_sxp.php
Does all the above and more but is not free $20 or 30day trial - go to their website and DL heaps of addons one designer created a 688i submarine login screen I was hoping to find a Uboat one but could find none. So requested for one. Yes you can DL there Style builder as well and create your own. We might see a rush of uboat styles soon:hmm:

I don't remember if it was here or on another forum but I seem to remember being suggested to stay away from this Windows overhauls, as they can potentially make Windows unstable or have side effects for a variety of apps, including games.

Anyone know or recall anything like this?

No they are fine. Ive had StyleXP since version 1.0 (its now v3.19) and they have never slowed down my PC there is an option to turn off StyleXP from using system resources if your PC lacks ram, but even on a PC with low ram as 512mb she will be okay.

As for the Transformation pack thats a risk the user will have to take. It does make changes that could break windows - the creator does warn you before you start. But ive had no problems with it.

Style XP is safer.

There are many Stylexp Themes websites such as this one :

Nice and cool, but can we configure vista to have that old classic windows look?
I don't need fancy stuff on my comp, i prefer performance.

Yes you can, you can even have your windows to look like a MAC if you want. Classic, or modern up to you what skins you choose.
