The context: The Union squadron was entering Mobile Bay, Alabama in 1864, under the guns of two separate forts. The leading ironclad hit a mine, which at that time were called torpedoes (the names changed in 1870 when Whitehead invented the first self-propelled torpedo). When Farragut saw no other choice but to run through the minefield, one of his aides said "But Admiral, the torpedoes...", which led to Farragut's famous quote.
