220 meters is so shallow especially in 1942. You can go down to this depth even with VII with no damages on a hull and I don;t see anything impossible with that.

I once sunk to 250 meters with a VIIC having flooding, now then you have to think about to blow some ballast and get those darn floodings repaired ASAP.
