In their defense, the boys found upon the medicinal alcohol located in the Skippers bunk for, well, medicinal needs for the injured. Anyway, upon drinking up the entire stock.....they, well, passed out for a indeterminant amount of time claiming seasickness..... followed up by green vomit that smelled closely of chum and beans on a hot tin roof. Not to mention the itching disorder in the lower regions they received from the local fawna at the last port of call ...shall we say....at the cost of $20.00 per pop.. I believe we should give these boys a stay of sentence as a result of being disenfranchised in the Navy and having to serve in the submarines against their will. I understand all of them signed the waivers for the boats under duress....probably sober at the time.

Other than that....leaving the poor lads at battlestations puts them to sleep. Under the fair labor act we would like to bring charges on the Skipper and the entire fleet for this act of over working the men to the point of drinking....hhhmmmm....I mean exhaustion

as the convening authority, i'm the judge, tho you'ld be one of the empanelled members to decide their guilt, or lack thereof. as for being left at their battlestatios for too long, that's not the case as we were engaging a convoy at the time and evading escorts and it was only the second watch which fell asleep at their stations. i'll leave what Warhawk said stand for now, until i hear from the prosecutor

It is well known that the Submarine Force is an all Volunteer force. None of these men are here under duress. In the immortal words of Henry Cabot Henhouse III... "You knew the job was dangerous when you took it."

And Defense Counsel knows full well that Civilian Law does not apply to the Military.

And no one offered to share the alledged "Medicinal Alcohol" with either you or me Your Honour.

And I'm hungry.

And my feet itch.

The boys were mislead at the recruiting station. Something about a cruise in the Pacific and fruity drinks. Tour the islands, that sort of thing. The contract showed, 'The Pacific Queen' as the cruise line. Sailor in every port and port in every sailor. See the world! It is not just a job it is $1.75/hour. Who would not jump on that?

Well, I don't know.. If I dig back 35 years I do recall that we did a heck of a lot of sleeping during General Quarters. Even the real ones (though not a lot of those).

If nothing is going on, you sleep. That's Number one rule. Wake up when stuff is happening and take care of business Othewise, no one seemed to really care too much.

As a representitive of the Union of Submariners, United Captains and Kapitans (USUCK), I demand all charges be dropped. It is clearly a breach of protocol 489 which states, and I quote.

"Any person who commits an offence within the meaning of this Protocol if that person unlawfully and intentionally, when the purpose of the act, by its nature or context, is to drink substances containing an alcohol level above 15% shall be considered not viable for situations of war. Commanders are advised to ensure the health, fatigue, underwear cleanliness and sobriety of all under his or her command. Failure to do so will result in loss of your vesel and advice on how to 'BE MORE AGGRESSIVE.'

Your honour, your holiness and yours sincerly, it is obvious that this crew was not in a state for general quarters and thus can not be held accountable for dereliction of duty. I will be making a formal complaint to the USN and informing my superiors of the wrongs that have been done this day.

As an expert witness, it's also well known battle stations is not the only cause of excessive fatigue leading to yawning off. Pressing the crew through extended surface running in bad weather prior to your engagement, then the engagement itself, left the entire crew too tired to assume their duties after action on the surface. A crew cycle with lower fatige rating whould have been placed on watch.
