I nor anyone else here has to answer to you and what your idea of what realism should be.Nor do I even want to hear about it.Your idea of realism is not my idea of realism.Realism is in the eye of the individual player.SO STFU about it and go pester someone else. You play the GAME your way I will play the GAME my way.
Now hang on a second!

In no way have I made any kind of personal attack or snipe on you in this thread or any other!
I haven't said that any one way of playing the game is better than any other way. I have played and enjoyed the game at all realism levels, there is no "right" way to enjoy SH3 and I have never said other wise.

No, by definition realism is not subjective. It is something that can be checked .
If it is "in the eye" of a individual that pink and red striped destroyers crewed by mice are realistic then that individual is wrong.

All I was saying is that, because sinking multiple escorts before attacking a convoy in 1939 was not a tactic used, taught or encouraged by u-boats, it is not a realistic tactic to employ.
I was not implying that using unrealistic tactics is a bad thing at all, sometimes I chose to my self, and I was certainly not implying that you are a bad person or snipe at you.

I don't know why you have taken my post(s) as personal attacks on you, but I apologize for anyway in which I have caused offense.

Sorry of I did take it that way...not always in the best of moods or is the mind working well when I first wake up.At least not until I get my 3rd cup of coffee .

As for tactics...I usually dont go for the real tactics employed as we see in history books the results of those.
I like to make em up on the fly and as I go.So far they work well for me.

Early in the war I do target the Destroyers as they are fewer in number in the convoys and less of a threat.Takeout the 1 or 2 escorts and ravage the convoy, but later in the war you can be sure I leave them alone and give them as much room as they need.

However if one puts himself in the position of being open to attack then I will do so just for the purpose of self defense and protecting my boat.

I know...the crew did well though.

They got 31 Uboat clasps,2 IC 2nd class and 1 IC 1st class.

No problem mate, I'm glad we're understanding each other again.

If your interested in how the real klauens operated against destroyers....

In the early years of the war convoy escorts where ignored as targets because they followed unpredictable paths (unlike SH3 ) so torpedoes usually missed unless you fired salvos. It was considered a waste of torps that could be better used sinking merchant ships and their valuable cargos.
This doctrine was reinforced when most attacks against destroyers looked like misses. In hindsight, this was probably down to the depth keeping problems with torpedoes, the shallow draft of destroyers and magnetic pistol failure in the first years of war.
Klauens where, however, trained to use the stern torpedo tube to target attacking destroyers, but this was often met with failure due to the bad AOB and magnetic torpedo failure/depth keeping.
Lone destroyers on predictable courses would often be attacked with a salvo if no other targets where around.

Towards the end of the happy time some of the torpedo problems where starting to be fixed. Destroyers where becoming better at sinking subs as well. As a result Bdu ordered u-boats on the convoy routes to attack destroyers even if there was little chance of a hit. The hope was not primarily to sink destroyers, but that the destroyers would become less effective if they where afraid of being hit by a torpedo. Attacking merchant shipping was still the priority and warship stinkings where somewhat rare.

Only when acoustic homing torpedoes became operational did subs start sinking all the escorts before attacking the convoy. The first successes where stunning and a few convoys where decimated, but the allies had predicted that the Germans would introduce homing torpedoes and with in two weeks destroyers where being fitted with "foxer" decoys that confused homing torpedoes. Not only where destroyers protected from u-boat attack again, but the foxer device meant that acoustic torpedoes where unable to hit anything in a convoy.
