Israel indefinitely delays Palestinian prisoner release as hostages freed

Quote:
Israel says it is indefinitely delaying the release of more than 600 Palestinian prisoners, in another potentially major setback in the ceasefire process.

Benjamin Netanyahu said the release was now going to be delayed until the next handover of hostages by Hamas was guaranteed - and without what the Israeli prime minister called the degrading ceremonies Hamas has put on each week.

Only one more handover - of the bodies of four hostages who died in captivity - is due to take place in the first phase of the ceasefire deal, which is due to end on 1 March.

No arrangements for the release of other living hostages, due to take place in the second phase, have yet been made.

Delegations from Israel and Hamas were due to negotiate the exact terms of the second phase while the first was ongoing - but have yet to meet.

Mediators will be working overtime to get the deal back on track and avert a possible collapse, after both Israel and Hamas accused one another of breaking the terms of the agreement.

Netanyahu accused Hamas of "repeated violations", including the "cynical use of the hostages for propaganda purposes".

In response, Hamas official Izzat al-Rishq strongly condemned the decision to postpone the release of the prisoners in a statement on Sunday morning.

He said that Israel's claim that the handover ceremonies were humiliating was a "false claim and a flimsy argument" aimed at evading its obligations under the ceasefire agreement.

Netanyahu's statement came after four hostages taken captive on 7 October - Tal Shoham, Omer Shem Tov, Eliya Cohen and Omer Wenkert - were released on Saturday.

The two other released hostages, Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed, were held in Gaza for years - Mr Mengistu since 2014 and Mr al-Sayed since 2015.

In exchange, Israel was supposed to release 602 Palestinian prisoners. Hamas accused Israel of violating the agreement by delaying the release.

The six Israeli hostages are the final living hostages to be returned as part of the first phase of a ceasefire agreement.

Meanwhile, outside the Ofer Prison in the occupied West Bank, family and friends waited for the release of Palestinian prisoners.

You can always do as you like. Let me know which post it was so I can see it. I can sometimes forget posts. I sometimes do that to make correction or do a total rewrite. The post that sticks out the most is where I wrote a piece that saw that dastardly Canadian Hockey Team inflict more pain and misery on the U.S Hockey teams and other Hockey Teams from other Countries. I thought we ( The U.S ) had a chance. Silly me.

Six children die of hypothermia amid freezing conditions in Gaza

The deaths come amid a harsh cold snap in Gaza and Israel’s blocking of shelter from entering the enclave.

Dr Saeed Salah, medical director of the Friends of the Patient Charitable Hospital in Gaza City, said on Tuesday that three NEWBORNS – aged between one and two days – died shortly after being admitted. Two more children also succumbed on Tuesday morning, with a sixth death reported in Khan Younis, in southern Gaza.

Gaza’s civil defence agency also confirmed recording the deaths of six NEWBORNS due to the severe cold wave and lack of heating over the past week. Doctors confirmed that these NEWBORN BABIES arrived to the hospital not suffering from any particular diseases.

The deaths of the children come as Israel continues to block the entry of temporary housing into Gaza, despite agreeing to allow it under the terms of the ceasefire agreement.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has also raised alarm over escalating attacks on healthcare facilities in the occupied West Bank.

Is Gaza ceasefire deal about to fizzle out?

Quote:
The first stage of the ceasefire in Gaza, comprising hostage-prisoner exchanges between Israel and Hamas, expires on Saturday. But talks on the second phase, which were due to start earlier this month, have yet to begin. Now both sides are accusing the other of deliberately breaking the fragile truce.

On Sunday, Israel postponed the release of 620 Palestinian prisoners, due to be freed in exchange for six Israelis the day before. It blamed the indefinite delay on Hamas' hostage release ceremonies, in which armed militants paraded captives, some visibly emaciated, in front of crowds and displayed coffins of deceased Israelis under a caricature of the Israeli prime minister. This is "cynical exploitation of our hostages for propaganda purposes", Benjamin Netanyahu's office said in a statement. Israel is ready to "resume intense fighting at any moment".

Hamas called the delay a "blatant violation", saying it would not engage in further talks until the prisoners were released. "Netanyahu is clearly sending strong messages that he is intentionally sabotaging the deal," a Hamas official told Al Jazeera. He is "preparing the atmosphere for returning back to the war".

This is "the latest big bump in the road", said the BBC. It comes after Hamas handed over deceased Israeli hostage Shiri Bibas on Thursday – but the body turned out to be someone else's. That sparked widespread "anger and shock in Israel"; Netanyahu denounced what he called the "cruel and malicious violation" of the agreement. Her body was returned on Friday, but the past few days show "how fragile the ceasefire process remains".

The prisoner-hostage exchanges "suited both Israel and Hamas", said The New York Times. Every hostage "brought relief" to Israel, while Hamas' "prestige was bolstered among Palestinians" with every released prisoner. These swaps are set to end on Thursday, with the release of four more Israelis (most likely deceased) for several hundred Palestinians. "Unless new exchanges are arranged, both Hamas and Israel will have fewer reasons to keep the truce going."

Normally I distinguish between determination and sadism, but with the Hamas scum I have certainly begun to think in sadistic terms.

I do not feel the slightest bit of compassion for them, nor for anyone who supports this kind of horror and excuses it, relativises it, defends it. Not the slightest bit. I once personally dealt with torture victims from the Balkan wars, and that already was bad. Nothing worse there is than to look into a pair of eyes - may it be human or animal -, and seeing nothing in there, just a black empty abyss and no ground at the bottom. That does something with you, and its nothing good. Sucks up your trust in life and that there is a sense in existence that we just do not know. But yes, it makes you stronger in a way, more determined, harder. At the cost of becoming more bitter. Or you sooner or later lose yourself, if you stay too long, some helping people have this happening to them, too, they get buried under their experiences and empathy. All in all the loss is higher than the gain. Thats why most helpers dont do this sort of work for too long, I guess. For me, it were just weeks. That was enough.

Empathy is good, but you should always keep it limited and under tight control. Reason is needed, too. And sometimes its more important than just empathy.

Yep, hiding underground like sewer rats and 'bravely' wear masks to hide their identities when they crawl out of the ground.
