Like others said it's really down to preference, but from a sub drivers point of view (never played the other units in DW) for me SC with SCX has the edge over DW. I like the additional units that SCX provides, having said that I like the quick mission generator that DW has. However, there is one thing in DW, even though some would consider it minor, that has always bugged me and that is dead platforms disappear after a short time, why I'm not sure. In SC they remain in game and in shallow water engagements can attract active torpedoes. Soon after buying SC I remember playing the mission 'Command Challenge' and watching my Mk48 torp that I had fired at an LA class boat being pulled off course by a dead TR-1700 sub sitting on the bottom . In theory in shallow waters you could use a dead unit to evade incoming torpedoes.

The bottom line is that I enjoy both sims and they will remain on my hard drive for sometime to come.

As sub games, both are very good in their own right. I recommend playing both of them for what they both offer. For me, DW is a superior game overall. It has improved graphics, a drivable diesel sub with the proper interfaces, and other improvements. SC has SCXIIc/SCU. DW has the excellent LWAMI mod. They are both worth it in my view. But if I had to choose one over the other, as a sub game, I believe would have to choose DW.

Damn this thread on SC compelled me to install SC again.
And I was greeted by the very well made opening movie which DW cannot even come close to compete and the well made menu far better than in DW imo. Apart from that, transparent water is quite cool too. If only DW had it. Of course the graphics is showing its age. I squint my eyes when I look at that Kilo or Typhoon. But when it comes to surface ships I don't see any significant difference apart from the OHP class.

I'm in the process of downloading a non SCX mod now.

SC made me smile again. I look forward to playing the campaign and listening to that Russian accent giving me the briefing.

I looked at subguru and I realized that many of the community made scenarios seem to have disappeared. Most now require SCX/SCU installation.

I have to admit that I dislike the accuracy of the passive sonar in SC. I mean the TMA lines are all too accurate to be realistic. All you need is input from at least 2 different sonar and you will get pinpoint accuracy of where the contact actually is.

You know I've had SC since it was released and I've never ticked the transparent water box in the settings menu. What does it do exactly (obviously makes the water transparent, but I thought it was fairly transparent anyway) and does it add to the realism in any way?

Well it's a matter of personal subjective preference but I've seen pictures of SSN at periscope depth in clear ocean being clearly visible.
