I allways find them when leaving Lorient or St.Naz.

I knocked of an S class traveling by it self near Scotland not to long ago. My previous meeting have all been in a convoy.

I just found one in a port called Blyth In 1939. Also found two reasonably good sized ships 1 whaleing ship 1 depot ship and 1 coastal coal ship.

Blyth was an important submarine base for North Sea operations during WWII.

I sank one in 1940 just off of Lorient too. I found it fairly easy though, they weren't very good shots. Probably worse than late-war merchants in fact. And, IIRC, it only took 5-8 hits from my 105 to bring them down.

I experienced the same thing, although it took me just 3 rounds and 2 hits to bring it down!
The hits were lucky ofcourse, but it was enough to do the trick, the enemy gunners didn't even have time to swing the gun around!
