In the UK we are charged approx £5 ($10) per gallon of petrol, but beer works out at a staggering £20 ($40) per gallon! At this rate I am going to have to start drinking petrol to save myself some money!

Depends on your beer choice! 128 ounces = 1 US Gallon. That is less than one half rack! So if you buy Budweiser at 24 cans for $5 (crap beer), then you are paying $2.50 a gallon. If you Buy Aventinus Icebock for example at about $120 per 24 pack, well, I can help ya!

I no longer go the pub or as you guys say, the bar. The cost is getting out of hand here for example a good strong beer will now set you back £4.73 a pint and and average one is £3.94, better off going to the supermarket.

I hear ya. I've been buying Deschuttes Inversion IPA constantly lately for about $12 a 12 pack. Its fairly strong at 6.8% too, so it doesn't take many to do the job! :p

Matter of fact, i am not eating out much lately either. Getting tired of cheap places starting to cost $60 for a meal, and a decent place costing $100. Crazy. I'd rather keep my money thanks!

Pub or Bar food price wise is not to bad as long as you find a nice place that dose nice food. My local Fish & Chip shop gone up a little in price but I still can get a good meal for under a fiver, just.

You are talking British pounds though. It takes 2 dollars to equal 1 British pound, so to me - that's $10!!! My fav pub in Seattle that serves up good food (I've posted it here before) only costs about $5 to $6 a plate!

£3.94 for an average pint? Where the bleedin' hell are you drinking Steed, Buckingham Palace? The only £4-odd pint I have is bottles of Fullers Vintage Ale. Other than that London Pride is about £2.60 and ESB is £2.80. No wonder you've given up the pub! Of course, for a cheap pint theres always Wetherspoons.

One advantage high oil prices have that nobody can deny: they bring awareness for energy and ressources as well as envrionmental issues to public awareness levels that any well-meant pontificating of the media can only dream of, and substantially change people's readiness to consider alternatives to their traditional consummation behavior. Or in other words: needs are far more motivating than debates. "Wer nicht hören will, muß fühlen", as we say in German. In the end, man only chnages when he cant stand the pain anymore. the risk is that then it eventually may be too late to adapt just in time.

Investement banks have started to launch investment packages that try to make use of an expected oil price beyond 300$ within the next 10 years. at the same time airlines have been forced into a dieting that will kill many of them and slim down the rest so that this will help to reduce air trafficking to more reasonable levels by making it less affordable. Very well.

Where arguments fail, reality won't.

Only problem with reality - there is no reason for the prices as they are. America has enough resources to offset any of this if it really wants to for itself, to the tune of 300 years at current levels with Americas resources alone.

I think its some sort of ploy to drain all other countries first.
