You have to guess range when you have no other way to tell.
Guess the range, guess the AOB and do your best with the speed. Get within 800m before you fire. The AI subs sometimes do not sink.

I ran into an S class a year ago (game time). I thought it was one of our own until it started shooting at me! Fortunately, my gunner was a lot better and I took it out pretty quickly. Lots of renown IIRC.
