RAM is definitely low, but I know folk who have managed the game with the same amount.

Your best chance is to stop all other background programmes, but your ideal solution is to expand your RAM to at least 1 preferably 2GB if you are able.
Yes Yes i re-built one of these machines and installed Vista home basic on it. and it ran SH3 ok not the best but Ok (but not with the side bar running)

512mb of Ram ....stock SH3 will need 80% of this ram to run and also any on board ram you have on the graphics card

Edit..... was it because your machine started freezing up or pausing for long periods i have known quite a lot of people who brought this machines because they were on offer. and lived to regret it i dont know how old you machine is ... but around the two to three year mark the motherboards start to fail i dont know about the new ones YET ..

Just get more memory. Its cheap and easy to install, plus it speeds up your computer. Its much better then trying to make your computer think it has more memory. That method wears down your computer.

The missions you want to start - where are they from?

Try this:
Get you the latest DirectX 9.0c - google for it!
Install!
Run a diagnosis:
START -> Run -> "dxdiag" (without "")
Let it load and work yourself through all the tabs/tests.
Do you get any hints?

To my understading...

That method is increasing the virtual memory of the computer.
That means it's like overclocking the RAM.
It will eventually tire out and you without something to do.

I DO NOT KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!

Someone with more knowledge on the topic, please elaborate this scenario.

you are right to expand the Virtual memory is just a quick fix not a long term thing to do it will cause the machine to slow and over work so yes in the end it will fail and other programs will start to fail or take forever to finnish doing what they are ment to ....... ADD MORE RAM..... this will help more
