Damn do these radicals make me laugh. The part about Christmas and gifts: priceless, just like a Capital One commercial. And since when is Christmas about Jesus? I always thought it was about family and giving stuff to one another to express love for one another and having each other together to reflect on the past... and there's a small mention about Jesus, but that's not the main point.
Were did you get the idea that Christmas is about family and giving stuff(other than how commericalized it is now)? It is about the birth of Jesus. The gift giving has made it commericalized.

But, I have to agree...some are just overboard with it all to the point of lunacy.

Well yes and no, the non-Christian stuff was blended in from pagan customs of midwinter festivals.

Just like Easter its nothing to do with bunny rabbits and eggs thats the Pagan side of it, an old Saxon belief in presenting the gifts to their gods - the rabbit and egg is the symbol of rebirth. Easter is about Jesus.

I don't think that the main thrust of christmas is about the birth of Jesus or
commercialism any more.

Certinaly not the birth of Jesus as the vast majority of atheists and even a sizable
proportion of Jews, Muslims and buddhists have some form of celebration / gift
giving at that time of year.
And certainly not commercialism as most people religious or not would say that is not what
they value the most about the celebration.

It's much more a part of our culture than part of a religion or shopping opportunity.

The the main thrust is not Jesus around your parts anymore but it is around mine. So, if a "sizable portion" or "vast majority: said it is not about the birth of Jesus but all the same we hand out gifts. For most folks these days is just a day off from work.

More part of a culture than part of a religion? Where do you hail from? In my neck of the woods is so much more religion then a culture. The only culture I see is the culture of the credit card at that time of year. It is becoming totally commericalized.
