I can see the smoke of the AA shell's explosion, even when firing AA gun myself.

But when looking from scene camera I can't see it.

Yep you can see the black some if you put your video setting with high quality. And yet it would help you to aim the plane easier!

Thanks for the info Letum.

I did know that the 3.7 cm ammo was fitted with a self destruct tracer.

However, bearing in mind the comparatively small size of the round, and its range of approx 14,000 ft, I wouldn't expect to see anything even remotely resembling the explosion cloud from an 88 cm.

So I'm not too disappointed at not seeing anything from my own gunfire.

Will have to keep an eye open for AI flak effects in future though!!

Edit: @ Richardphat
I'm also going to winch up my graphics settings to see if I get something!

Dont forget to use the AA shell instead of a AP shell

I've never actually SEEN the smoke, although it makes SH3 more unrealistic without it. The flak smoke should appear from whatever flak gun had fired it into the air.

Well that certainly did the trick. For the first time ever I saw a flak burst from the 3.7 (both AI and self manned).

Quite a pleasing effect really, first you see the tracer flying off and after a while a small flash and a puff of smoke. You have to zoom in on the gunsight to see it easily and use the AA ammo as Richardphat says.

Is it realistic though?? Somehow doubt it. From what I can I can gather, the ammo (unlike that used on the 88cm flak ) did not have air burst capability and caused damage only on impact.

Sure it self destructed...you couldn't have tons of live rounds that had missed their target, raining down on the population! However I can't believe you would see the explosive effect of what is really a glorified aircraft cannon shell, from 2 - 3 miles away - which was its range -depending on elevation.

Anyhow no matter. There are plenty worse inaccuracies in SH3. And it does look rather nice.

The real big bonus for me though in ramping up the graphics quality was in other areas: particularly the ship smoke. For quite some while this smoke had looked a bit thin and blocky. Looks tremendous now.

Thanks for starting the thread RP!!

There were timed fuzes for both German 37mm and Bofors 40mm, but I can't imagine these were ever used on submarines, as the process for setting such a fuze would be impractical on a sub deck.

They did, however, self-destruct, typically when the tracer burned out. For example, the 37mm c/30 ammo had a 12 second tracer, so it would likely be very far away before self-destructing.

The self-destruct range and effect can be adjusted in the shells.sim file.
