Default Hardcore Mod for SH Veterans

The reason sh4 so easy is because of the thermal layers if sh3 had thermal layers it would be an easy game to,so with a simple tweak u can make sh4 twice as hard as sh3 Open the Data/Cfg/Sim.Cfg ,in Sonar change sonar sensitivity from 1.0 to 0.05 (this is TMaru setting) Enemy Surface Factor to 120 and Thermal Layer attenuation to 1.0.Now go to Hydrone section and change the other thermal layer attenuation to 1.0,this will disable the thermal layers u most do this while on port .This is sh4 stock 1.5 i dont use any of the super mods. Now u must run silent and deep you can still get away if u know what you doing, sometimes you wont, the external camara helps,if you are commanding an sboat just hunt for lone merchants.I know this mod is not for everybody only for those who like to be challenge and deadcharge for hours below crush depth
for me this is the only way to play the game

Thermal layers are a real thing. Why take them away to be a hard core SH simmer? The game reduces the detection from DD by half I believe. Removing them is not the way to go IMO. Increasing the DD detection is probably better as I have found with improved DD mods. Try Ducimus Bongo Pete and see how you do. Peto made a evasion mod. First time I used it, my butt was sunk in under 15 minutes and this is using the layers.

I like the thermal layers but I think it a a blanket for the whole area where as in RL you could go in and out of the layer and the layer was not always at the same depth as we see in the game. Some work needed here on that but for now to over come it better DD or stronger depth charges. Something like that.

Well that explains why it seems too easy

That makes a big difference. It's very easy to avoid escorts if you have eyes outside the sub. Playing by ear really changes things!

Gato76!!!! external view to avoid the escorts..... That is to funny. Try 100% and spend a few hours looking up at the ceiling of submarine wondering if the next can is coming for you.

External view is great and I'm like you, I like it. Very hard not to use it. But, over time 100% made the game totally different in feel. Making a contact 8 miles off and you cannot hit outside view to see it. 100% start tracking to find it a friendly tugboat:rotfl:

I always thought that sh4 was a bit too easy, and I was wondering which is in you opinion the best single mod (I mean a mod with this single feature/purpose, not a mega mod with a lot of other stuff) to improve the escorts' effectiveness...
