You won't get the IXD2 in 1939 with GWX. IIRC, the IXD2 becomes available somewhere in 1943. The biggest sub you'll get early in the war is the IXB, in 2nd Flotilla at Wilhelmshaven - still able to reach Canada at economic speed, if that's what you want.

I get this "NULL" sector to patrol when:

I add/remove a mod (I am at my homebase atm)
I refuel and rearm at a friendly port or ship (e.g. Bessel at Vigo ... "das ist in Spanien" )

What does it mean?

Simply spoken: you do not get a sector to patrol so you can go hunting freely but also can't get the 500+200 renown from a patrol.

To avoid this (and for all the other specials) I use Sh3 Commander and set the Patrol Sector to my favourite: BF17

Just use SH3 Commander and set your own patrol grid.

The renown for returning to base doesn't work anyway....never has AFAIK

I have never tried SH3 Commander. How come everyone seems to be so into it? What advantages does it give you?
I guess I will just have to go into the files -- I think it's the flotilla .cfg-- and change the patrol grid assignments myself. It would probably make sense to just copy the patrol grids for a type IXB from 1939-1943, since it has fairly similar range to a type XXI, right? Any other advice would be appreciated! Oh, and btw, when I mentioned getting a type IXD2 in 1939, I meant after some serious editing to the basic .cfg files LOL! Thanks for all the help so far, Kaleuns!! Put some more Allied merchies on the bottom!! Good hunting!!
