Default Tutorial covers

This is my first attempt at trying to create anything on a computer so cut me some slack

Since I like to do some reading away from the computer I've been printing off alot of the fine tutorials and guides for sh3 from many of the talented members of this community.(or in the case of the wonderful GWX2 manual, sections thereof )

I decided I would try to make some covers so I could bind some of this info together in similar catagories and have it be a bit more organized.

After some trial and much error I came up with something that I think is passable.

The picture for the Hydrophone Hunting cover I borrowed from one of Venatore's loading screens(Hope that's o.k. mate). I would have liked to make it look like an old stamp to match the others ,but I have neither the program nor the skills for such a transformation. [EDIT figured out how to do it!]

Suggestions welcome

***NOTE...THESE ARE ONLY THE COVERS...you supply the meat.

Marvelous work, ejhawk56!

It's about time someone got around to compiling all the gameplay tutorials into a single series. Now I just wish someone could do the same for all the information and tutorials concerning SH3 modding.

You can definitely put me at the top of the list for a PDF of your "Kriegsmarine Unterseeboot Handbuch".

Thanks for the nice comments Graf Paper, but these are ONLY the covers.

They are just to provide a cover for you own set of documents in a report folder or binder. Nothing earth shattering here . Not historical in any way but hopefully graphically pleasing

Everyone's collection of what they think is worth putting to hard copy is different so I left the titles somewhat broad.

For instance,in my colletion, under "tools and tactics" I have included U-jagd docs(Joegrundman),Angriffscheibe handbook(klh),OLC GUI quick guide(Skookum), Hitman's guides,etc.

Under "plotting and targeting" I have The Hunt (danotec),Wazoos stuff.etc

I think I'll change the title of "hydrophone hunting" to "hydrophone and sonar" so it is more general, but obviosly in there goes the tutorial by Raduz and some of Joegrundman's info.

I'm also going to make one more for "charts and references" for more frequently used stuff.

Maybe I'll try to figure how to upload to filefront and just put them there if anyone's interested.

Anyway thanks for the nice comment...sorry to disappoint.

Well, it is somewhat of a letdown in the respect that the compilation I thought was forthcoming was more due to my misunderstanding what you'd stated.

It's still very nice work on the chapter covers you've done. Historically accurate or not, they have a very pleasing, classically minimalist look.

Now all you need to do is go get a free account at File Front or Megaupload.

Corrected photos in first post and added link.

Due to the overwhelming demand I've decided to make the first minute a donation only period to SubSim. It will be free to all after that time.

O.K...still fine tuning these damn silly things. ( heh,we all have to start somewhere and I saw these cool stamps on ebay and had to find a use for them )

Changed the title to to be more historically in line with BdU's official commander's handbook..."U.Kdt.Hdb.". Graphics obviously aren't in line...just pretend Doenitz brought in Goering to do the artwork! (o.k...maybe they're not THAT colorful )

Anyway, found a clearer pic of the brown stamp so used that and made a few other minor changes. (see new pic in first post)

I will redo all the other covers this week with the new name and minor improvements and provide a new link when done. (is that baited breath I smell...no,sorry,just discovered the trash needs to go out!)

I still want to experiment making the other photo look like a similar style stamp. If anyone knows of a free program or reasonably priced program(I'm using Infraview right now)that would allow me to do that kind of stuff please let me know.

Also, for some reason when I convert from Word to Pdf the size seems to shrink somewhat and distort the propotions a bit. I'll have to try and figure out what's going on with that. Anybody know what would cause that?

Also, sorry,..realized I should have posted this originally in the regular forum as this is not a mod. Hope I didn't offend any modders out there and Moderator please feel free to move.

Looking good EJ

The best freeware image editing program i know is Gimp, but i hear Picasso is good too. I don't know if either have a straightforward stamp edge effect, but you can always make it yourself by cutting out half circles using the circle marquee tool

Thanks , Joe. It was the manuals by you and klh that made me finally decide to start printing some off to hardcopy and assemble a nice binder. ( a la the old "Falcon 4" style)

What I'm hoping to do is paste the image inside of the existing stamp border somehow and apply some type of watercolor effect. Then overlay with some text.

Don't know if this is possible with a free program and limited knowledge. Will experiment with those programs you mentioned.

I'm glad you like them

I'm certain that Gimp has the effects you are looking for. You may have to experiment for a bit before you fnd one that you are completely satisfied with

Well...the highly anticipated tutorial covers are finally finished.

With the help of my new friends Frau Irfan and Herr Gimp our quest ended with the discovery of the elusive "Hitler's Lost Stamp" (can't wait until the nurses on the pier hear about this!)

I used it for the Hydrophone and Sonar cover.

Now this thread can finally ride the wave down to the world of Broken Links
