That's what a good friend said when I told him
i was gonna get married again.
Did you reply to your friend "call it a weakness"!

As much as computers are a pain, just imagine living without them, I'd be totally lost!

Must you leave

The same could be said for fighting with the mighty Luftwaffe in IL2-46 Sturmovik, in the end you loose.

Now put that context into real life [history]

Your a young U-boat Captain; its 1945 and only a hand full of U-boats are left and everyone of you classmates and friend who you have met during your career are either dead or have never been heard from again.

You get a message that your superior wants to see you; you have prior knowledge [rumour] that you have been tasked to continue to take the fight to the British & Americans.

You get your orders and you brief your officers only; as you know your NCOs with be shocked to know that Hitler is persisting with the lost cause;

Its the night before you leave...........you sit in your room studying photos of your mates who are gone...............this is a lost cause..........................but my crew will look to me for leadership.......I must be steadfast.

Your wife walks in and says "Must you leave? this is a lost cause; Germany is alone ; must you go?..................

What shall you say?
What would your fallen mates say?

It`s given me many enjoyable hours, having recently lost a leg, I find myself on my computer, doing business, or playing sims, compensates for a lot of the physical activities that I`m now limited to. I set aside time to play my sims, and enjoy all the mods put out by some very talented people, my hat is off to them. Can`t say enough about this sim, and the people that continue to improve upon it. i noticed that too, that in the end the germans lose, and thank heavens they did anyway, but it adds an edge to the game, like a caged animal trying to fight out. thats why i kinda dislike SH4 because in the end you win, no matter how many ships you sink, how many medals you earn. like a lion to a lamb.

same with the german side, both the german and american sub forces were a bunch of cowboys going somewhere that only people could dream (and frequently do) both ended up fighting for their lives no matter when in the war they fought, the game manual, for it does not state

"this game is a tribute to how badly we beat the germans in WWII"
or
"this game is devoted to how we crippled japan."

its dedicated to brave men, and i think sometimes we lose sight of that.

speaking about how you always lose and the game automatically ends in '45

there were many kaluens who refused to surrender their boat and kept on fighting till they had nothing left, and then when confronted, would rather scuttle their ship, and in some cases went down with it...

Ive sunk more destroyers than I have merchants...youll wish you never sailed into U-87s hunting grounds. When you pull into port, dont lull yourself into a false sense of security, your mines and subnets are just a petty challenge for my crew and I.

That's all very good points no doubt!

But see this way!

If you make it to the end of the game, without dieing
You don't loose and got your crew alive !

I think that is a good feeling in the end!

I don't no how many times I have started a new career ( Thanks to GWX )

But never reached the end of the war !

Maybe now ?? ( If the GWX team let me )

Since I have only recently begun to play or reenact the u-boat experience -- I began to approach as tryin to find the balance between the curundrum of "Mission first -- People always." In this I see my job to complete my assigned mission and return with my men and boat intact.

The challenge of this simulation is seeing how long you can keep this balance before the odds catch up with you -- and your crew. I am playing stock 84% and am currently at the end of 1940. I have had a good career so far, but not spectacular by the standards that I often read in the forum.

I have made so many mistakes so far that sometimes when I look in the mirror I swear I'm looking at the face of Bernard. Fortunately its early in the was when there is more room for error. Later I fully expect that my mistakes will have real consequences. In submarine warfare the ocean can be mighty unforgiving for even the slightest mistake. Thats not even mentioning that there are folks and machines actively hunting you and ready to take advantage of your mistakes.

The SH family of simulations as well as all the others have done a marvelous job of giving the layman a slight taste of the experience -- and we get to resurrect after each fatal mistake, and start our careers again a little bit wiser.

For me, it's not winning or losing. First off.... It's for the sense of adventure and the feeling that it's you against the world. Seccond, it's about attempting to top my tonnage reccord with every career. I always use SHIII Commander to keep track of kills and total tonnage. When I die, I go back to 1939 and start a new career with the goal of lasting longer and beating whatever my reccord tonnage is (I was about to pop in to tell Balz that I topped his first GWX 2.0 patrol with mine but when I logged in, he had just posted his "Balz gets One Million Tons in One Mission" thread. Oh well... gives me something new to strive for.)

My ultimate personal reccord for me to beat so far is 216850 tons and I'm nearing that in my current career so I think I'm going to set a new reccord for myself.

Which ones? Donitz gave his 'cease fighting' order on May 4, the formal surrender was issued on May 7. The last u-boat was sunk on May 8.
http://www.uboat.net/fates/losses/1945.htm

Given the time it takes for orders to actually be recieved (submerged boats sometimes don't get messages for days), I find the idea that they fought "till they had nothing left" to be a bit far-fetched.
